Gimbal bearing sizes?

I am doing an alignment on my Pre-alfa drive 165 mercruiser. I installed a new gimbal bearing, and I'm trying to do alignment with a driveshaft. What I am finding is that the driveshaft won't go through the gimbal bearing. There is a perfect ring of grease around the shaft where it meets the bearing and there is grease in the splines without any spline wiped clean. Is there more than one ID size for the gimbal bearing?

The drive shaft will go through the gimbal bearing if it was lined up, but with an alignment bar, you can push the bar in the coupling a little, lightly tap the bar all directions with a mallet to align the new gimbal brg. and then check the alignment.<br />Might give it a try with your shaft, but with all those splines involved you could really make a mess out of the inside of the coupling, so be very careful.

So the gimbal bearing can "float" on axis like a pillow block bearing?
