Should the gimbal bearing turn if stick my fingers in it and try to rotate it,or are the tighter than that normally?

Re: Gimbal bering question

It is still installed in the boat,I can't get it to turn. There is grease on it,and doesn't seem to be any play in it( the center won't rock,or move in or out).I tried putting a socket in it that was almost snug, and turn it,but it won't rotate at all.The outdrive looks fine, the shaft doesn't look like it has been spinning inside the bearing(doesn't look like the bearing was froze),and the orings are still intact on the drive shaft.I just don't want to bang out the old noe, install a new one and find out this is normal.

When you first remove the drive, it should turn very easily and perfectly smooth. When you grease it, it then will get a little stiffer, but you can still turn it.
IF you can't turn it at all, replaced it.
