On the early out-drives, why are there two tilt and trim switch part numbers listed for the two wire switch that goes in the top of the gimbal ring? How does one differ from the other? The 39672A1 switch (for power trim w/two hoses to each cylinder) is normally open (makes contact when the out-drive is all the way up). The other style in the parts book is 45942A1 (for standard and power tilt w/one hose) also only has two wires. Question is, is it a normally open or normally closed switch? What do these switches activate or cut out in the circuit? How about it senior out-drive mechanics? Trying to troubleshoot a new install on an old boat. Thanks

The switch fastened to the gimbal ring is the limit switch (2 bright blue wires) NO. The trim sender (gauge) is located inside mounted to the transom plate. It's operated hydraulicly. 1 purple wire & 1 black. It probably still works unless you gotta sinking bottom feeder. Best design they ever had. Just way too expensive to mass produce.

Well I need more from you, as well.
What engine/drive combo is it you have? I'm pretty sure you don't have a serial #.

Re: Gimbal Ring Tilt and Trim Switch in the Early Type One Out-drive

The engine is a 1968 Mercruiser straight 6 cyl 160. The out-drive a type one ser#C2125004A. Both look to be original to the boat. The lift cylinders that are on it have two hydraulic lines each to them. The tilt and trim switch control has three buttons. The two wires at the gimbal were in such bad condition when the boat was purchased I could not tell what the correct wiring should be with this setup. With two switches listed in the parts manual, what the difference in the switches might be. Both are two wire switches. Thanks again
