Is the purpose of the seal in front of (engine side) the gimbal bearing intended to minimize water flow into the boat, in case of a major u-joint bellows failure? If not it would seem that you would be better off without it, as a slow leaking bellows would keep the area around the u-joint full of water all the time.

DougV>

Mercruiser alpha one 140 hp 1986 model

Re: gimbal seal

I was told it's more to do with keeping the excess grease from the gimble bearing being whiped around by the u-joint shaft and messing up the inside of the boat behind the engine.

If your bellows was to tear and there was no seal to stop the water from entering the boat. It would not take long to sink.

TMD
