I have a 99 Nordic with a mag 454 and bravo1 drive that I need to replace the gimbal bearing on. My question is what all do I need? I hate to get into this stuff and have the garage all tied up waiting for a simple seal or minor part. And also is there anything else I should do while Im that far into it? The boat has 180 hours and Im planing on keeping it for a while. Thanks

Re: Gimbal ????

Howdy,

If you're going to do a gimbal bearing, you might consider doing the complete "Transom Service Kit" like the following from eBasicpower
Or the equivalent from many others....

Manufacturer: GLM Products, Inc.
Sierra Part Number: 18-8212
Mercury Part Number: 30-803100T1

You can buy the Sierra right here on iBoats!

Some people will ONLY use Mercury rubber products......

Thanks Rick, what are your thought on the sierra rubber?? I bought a sierra water pump last year and it looked decent? dunno?

one other thing, the reason Im doing this is because I heard a slight growling noise at idle near the drive and it went away just off idle but came back when the engine dropped to idle again? I was just planing on replacing the gimbal and the u joints but is there anything else I should look at?

Re: Gimbal ????

I use Sierra bellows almost exclusively, some weenies moan about the exhaust bellows being stiffer than OEM, but with correct installiation tools, not much of a prob.

That is me, but only applies to the driveshaft bellows. If the exhaust and shift bellows are in good shape, you may not need to change them. One note, the OEM mercruiser bearing is now a permalube unit that can not be greased, the aftermarket ones, I believe still have can be greased. If you use a slide hammer, get the BIG one.:D

I sort of look at it this way, a OEM bellows is about $100, ya got a 454, a fill up is what $300? With a part that can sink your boat if it fails, and costs less than a day's worth of gas, cheap shouldn't even be in the conversation. Just my opinion.

Don't forget to get an alignment tool and check/realign the drive/engine.
Also some spline grease for the drive shaft splines in the coupler.

Maybe I'm just lazy or maybe because I am still mending from bilateral knee surgery last March, but for $350, my marina shop changed mine out, checked alignment and bellows for damage, changed gear oil and called me to pick it up the next day. The boat was washed and cleaner then when I dropped it off. Work is guaranteed, its documented and I feel good that it was done right. The guy that does this at the shop is a Merc rep that has more certificates for Mercury schooling then I have seen any where... if there were any problems, I know they will stand by their work.

Yea I wish we had a shop around here I could say the same about.
Here's a link to download the OEM service manual. Section 4A covers the bellows change
http://www.4shared.com/document/UZ_e6ZT8/Service_Manual_11.html

You may also want to have a look at somw alignment information so you can understand that process a bit more before going in. Here is a thead that covers about all of it, including videos.

Thanks Don, I was looking through my manual lastnight but it appears to be more of a "owners manual" than a service.
