gimball bearing

16 ft 1985 thundercraft 140 hp merc io

i heard a klunking noise when turning engine off, my friend told me it is the gimbal bearing getting ready to go. is this expensive repair? can i do it myself or does it go in to a shop?

Ayuh,... It depends on how Handy ya are, 'n having tools helps...

It ain't that bad of a job,...
But,...
yer description don't sound like a gimbel bearing...

Time to remove the drive and have a look at the ujoints, and gimbal bearing.
To remove the drive, Put the shifter in forward gear, remove the trim cylinders from the outdrive, remove the 6 nuts holding the drive to the bellhousing, and pull the drive off. Any water come out of the bellows?
Pictures of what yo find at this point would be a good thing.
