My gimble bearing seized to the drive shaft and the housing got reemed out. A mechanic says it would cost Aprx $4,000.00 because the transom housing would need to be replaced. Is there an option such as installing a bushing or shimming the bearing or anything else? The outdrive is an OMC Cobra on a 87 Bayliner.
Thanks
Dennis

For that kind of dough u can have it retrofitted with a Volvo, probably less. Or look around for a rebuilt unit. Check sterndrive.com. And get a 2nd opinion. By the way, I don't think the whole boat is worth &4,000. Nothing personal or a knock on your Bayliner.

I hope it is worth $4000.00 I just put a new engine in it and I paid 6500.00 for the boat. 2000.00 is for the labor they said the engine has to be pulled and the job would take around 24 hrs.
Dennis

I think you better wait and get an opinion from some other people on here. 4000.00 seems like a hefty charge for that

I would guess the price is about right, not only is it for the transom shield, but the seal for the shield, gimbal bearings, probably the yoke assembly, bellows, maybe even the front seal in the drive, it has to be rust damaged from the rust that killed the gimbal bearing.

I would definatly look at updating to the SX shield with an sx-DP or an SX or even the composite depending on hull and engine size. that cobra unit worked great but its not worth 4 K to fix it
its not a hard job. it can be done in 12-24 hours depending on corrosion and access.
nice thing about the SX is it fits the cobra cutout

Do you have to replace the whole transom assembly or is there another way? There was only rust on the drive shaft the boat ran a couple hrs with a tore bello so there wasn't much damage except to the bearing and assembly. Also what is a sx shield and does the engine need to be pulled to put it in? Putting in a different out drive they said would cost 10,000.00 you need a new transom assemby and outdrive plus labor talk about a lot of CASH! Any Ideas
Thanks for the replies.

This is for the outdrive, transom assembly and labor. I have no idea of what this should cost? What is resonable?
Dennis

Re: Gimble bearing and transom housing

depends on what kind of deals you can find. sometimes you can get the drive and shield assy for 6K or so. its quick and easy to chaange depending on access. the engine will come out regardless. but its actually faster to replace it all with new than repair the old. but usually you can find used shield assymblies. there are a few around here. most the crabbers save the old parts on a repower. I just got a new SX shield assy for about 1900 from volvo. came with everything including the trim pump. its a lot of work to just replace the shield and switch all the parts from the old to the new. with todays labor rates its about as cheap to purchase the shield assy.
if you have access to a safe methgod of engine removal then shield assy replacement is doable with a minimum of tooling and a good service manual. about the only special tool needed will be the alignment tool.

Thanks for the help. I just seen my mechanic and he used a shim kit to put the gimble bearing in and he said there should be no problem.
Dennis
