Gimble Bearing. Serial number out drive 00593677 questions shop told me its bad.

Gimble bearing, The shop told me that my gimble bearing is really bad on my boat. Said it was a major problem and needs to be replaced asap. asked me if I heard grinding... no did i hear anything when I was turning no. What does this do when it goes bad. He said He can put the outdrive on but he wouldnt never run it like that. In the shop for a shift bellow.

It sounds like you maybe don't trust him? If so, go in and turn the gimbal bearing by hand while the drive's off, i.e. let him show you. Just tell him you want to understand the problem better and learn about it.

I've never had a gimbal bearing fail, but I'm sure these guys will tell you that it's not worth running with a bad one.

wouldnt say I dont trust him, its my neighbor friend who works on boats. Just really not sure y it wuold be bad and I didnt notice it my boats a 1989 also

They usually make noise unless it's just begining to get rough. As said above, reach in and turn it.

Number one enemy of the gimbal bearing is water intrusion. If water got in there, it's dying and needs replaced. If no water, stick your hand in the hole and spin it. If it's smooth, chekc the alignment, grease it and run it....

Once the drive is off it only takes a few minutes to change it, no big deal. When in doubt change it. Grease and realine the shaft it need be and done.
