Merc 350cid 260 h/p. Had new Gimbal bearing installed while I was waiting on my new SEI drive. While idling, loud "growl" can be heard and felt. As soon as I shift into fwd or rev. sound goes away. The mechanic said my "upper" was what he "thought" it was. I don't see how the upper would only whine or growl in neutral.
Help to diagnose.
Thanks,
Nick

Re: Ginbal Bearing Growling...

When in neutral, the upper is still working. When in gear, load from the lower may quiet the noise.
Check the gear lube for metal and see what the lube looks like.
Pull the drive and recheck the gimbal bearing and don't forget the ujoints. They can cause the noise also.
