Sorry for the long post...1993 Four Winns 18 ft

So getting ready to go fishing Sunday morning bright and early. On my way towing boat to lake, I stop to fill up with gas. I accidentally overfilled and some gas shot out of the overfill / vent line. I was prepared for this as I had a rag under the opening as its happened to me a couple of times before.

After cutting on the blower and putting in the drain plug, I put the boat in the water, take a nice deep breath of fresh air, a start the motor. I open the hatch to check for leaks, etc and it looks like there is approx 1/4 gallon or so of "water" in the bilge. There wasnt a drop in there before I left the house. Cut the motor off and check for water leaks and then started smelling the gas. After running through all connections, I didnt see any leaks at all coming from the engine, fuel lines, hoses. So I put a rag into the drain hole that leads into the bilge and it starts soaking water. Drag the boat back out of the water and take it home.

Thank God I have easy access to the fuel tank, took out the floor boards and gas is overflowing out of the where the sender connects to the tank, covering the top of the taank and making its way into the bilge. So I unscrewed it and siphoned what felt like three gallons out of it before the fuel level was an inch or so below the top of the tank. Cleaned everything up, put the sender back in and everything started up fine.

So, what happend that allowed my to overfill the tank like this? My vent line is not clogged as it kicked fuel out while at the pump. Is there anything else I need to check? It kinda freaked me out seeing the bilge fill up with fuel like that. Thanks for any thoughts.

Wow.

How long since you'd serviced the tank? IE, pulled it for an annual inspection?

You should check for corrosion at least that often, inspect the electrical connections, check the fittings for leaks, etc.

Actually I would doubt that the leak just started either. Very likely it's been trickling for a while, and filling the tank all the way probably just gave it more chance to leak.

Sounds like the seal around the sender unit is bad.

Tell me about it...would have been a new way to "catch" fish. I'll get another sender gasket. I cant see how it would go bad as its not old, bout a year, and is rubber.
As far as the other connections, I checked all those while I was in there and they all look good. I also left the floor open so I could check it out and run in the driveway again. My buddy at work said that the gas cap may be vented and may have failed. Will have to check later tonight.

Mine could holds at least 2-3 gallons in the hose leading from the cap at the back of the boat to the tank. Probably about a quarter gallon or so in the hose from the tank to the vent. I could easily see by the time it spits out the vent whatever is still in the filler hose being overfill, especially if you top it off after it spits at ya.

Note to self: Check fuel tank & connections this weekend when unwinterizing boat...

Glad you caught it before the boom, and thanks for posting as a reminder to the rest of us how that can happen.
