Glassing Stringers In Sections??

Can I start at the transom and glass over the stringer maybe in 4ft sections. The reason Im asking is because I can get the "repair packs 2ft x 4ft mat" at Walmart cheap. If I buy enough material to glass the entire stringer, the boat is a 20 footer, my wife would kill me.

Is it possible and would I need to sand where I overlap each section?

Another question-my stringers originally only had one layer of roven on them. They were definetly stable I had a hard time prying the glass off the stringers.

I was thinking the correct method is mat then roven. If I can cut cost I need to.

I believe you could glass in sections but yes you will have to sand between sections. You should go mat first then roven. On a 20 footer I'd go two layers of each, mat roven mat roven.

If you're using unwaxed polyester resin then there will be no problem doing it in sections even if you let cure, you just can't leave it sit for several days. If you use waxed resin or epoxy and you let it cure then you need to prep the surface before doing the next section. Most of the time you can just put the same amount of glass back in as what was there to start with. So if it was one mat and one roving, you shouldn't need to build it up any more than that.

Look for "Laminating Resin" on the label when buying...it's the "unwaxed" stuff ondarvette speaks of. It will make life much easier if you're not doing the whole glass job in one sitting.
