I just bought this boat from a friend that knows nothing about it, I am also new to boats. Can anyone help me on finding out if this is a 2 or 4 stroke engine?

Hi
its a mercury V6 2 stroke motor. Likely mid 80’s or just before maybe.
What glastron is that ? I have a cvx16 of a similar age. You really want to look closely at the transom. Most of this age with a V6 motor have a failed or failing transom. If you catch it in time you can strengthen it. I’d bet it’s compromised or been already addressed for sure. Well known for it.

Thanks, I will look into that. Do you know if it's carburetor or a fuel injection engine?

I dont know the model of the boat. I have no paperwork yet. The deal is not officially done yet, I'm just doing some research to see if it's worth purchasing.

Its carbs. I can almost be certain the transom will show signs of stress if it hasn’t already been repaired.
There are a few really good owners groups out there. It looks like a ssv model or similar. The engine on it are generally good but with all old 2 strokes you need to do a compression test on it. These were also well known for the oil injection system failing too. It will likely be pre mix now. If it isn’t...it needs to be ASAP.

I will look into the transform tomorrow. I couldn't find a separate oil tank for the fuel, is that what you mean by premix?

Based on the Cowl decals, the engine is a 1980 - 83, carbed. Premix the oil. Serial number will be Important when ordering many parts as in the years 1980 and 81, the 175 was a crank rated 2 litre, in 82 and 83, it was propshaft rated 2.39 liter.

That looks a lot like my '93 Merc 135HPV6 decal. A serial number will tell the tale. You can look it up at the maxrules web site.

If it is close in year to my motor, it should have three 2 barrel carbs, ADI ignition with 6 coils and dual voltage rectifiers. Fuel will be a 50::1 gas/oil mixture using a TCW-III rated oil.
