Re: Glastron 205 GX

Hi richdawg, I had the same dilemma myself. After a year of stalling I've finally ordered a Chaparral 265 SSI and had the same options of engine manufacturer. I’ve spoken to at least 30 different sets of boaters, builders, importers etc. including a local guy who builds and sells his own sports boats in which he fits both types of engine. All of them recommend the Mercruiser option (well OK, not the local Volvo dealer, but I guess that’s no surprise!!) None of them said the Volvo was a bad engine, just that the Mercruiser was more reliable, stronger (especially the lower unit of the outdrive) and had better components. And here in the UK servicing is cheaper as are spare parts. If you’re going for a dual prop option (not sure if that's available with the 5.0 litre though) the Mercruiser B3 drive is considered a lot stronger and reliable compared to the Volvo duo prop. Interestingly though, if it was a diesel option, they mostly recommended the Volvo!! Hope that helps.

Re: Glastron 205 GX

Congrats...I've got a '02 GX205 and have loved it over the last year and half. I've got the Mercruiser 5.0L carb (220hp). I bought from dealer stock so didn't have engine choice. I've not had any problems with mine. If I could've upgraded to EFI, I probably would've done that.

Hotbyte, thanks for the feedback.
I asked the dealer about the upgrade to 5.0 fuel injection and was told that would cost about $1500. So don't really think I'll take them up on that.

I've got the Mercruiser 4.3 and love it on our GX 185. That 205 with a 5.0 sounds sweet!

Re: Glastron 205 GX

Most people I have talked to reccommend the Volvo over the Merc. including mechanics that are certified to work on both. The Volvo drives are stronger and shift smoother is what I have been told. The only downfall would be fewer service dealers than Merc. They both use the same engine so the outdrive is the difference, and maybe the electronic engine controls on EFI engines.

Re: Glastron 205 GX

Thanks for all feedback, I took your advice hotbyte and upgraded to the 5.o GXI 270 hp (fuel injection) and also went to a tandem trailer with surge brakes on one axel. added about $2,000. to the total package. Not a better time to do it than the first time. Should be keeping this boat for a while as my last 71 bayliner lasted me over 30 years.

Thats exactly the same boat, even the same color. Mine will have a black tower and a black tandem trailer. Still a few weeks till we get it, but thats ok its still a little cold here.
Went for the test ride about 10 days ago, there was snow and ice on the boat launching ramp but it was a sunny day about 30 degrees. The wind chill was bad at 50 mph.

Re: Glastron 205 GX

We just bought a 195sx this past fall and love it. Went with the VOLVO 4.3 over the Merc 5.0 for a few reasons.
1. 2 year warranty vs. 1 year with the merc.
2. Much MUCH smoother shifting in and out of gear.
3. They didn't have a 5.0 volvo in stock and we got an end of the year price so ordering one was not an option.

GOOD LUCK with your new boat, you'll love it.
