i have a glastron mx 175 with a volvo penta sx and it seems to be making a rough sound when i turn left or right or when i put the trim up above normal but when i go straight it goes away. so i dont go to fast or make to many turns with it. i had a reply that it could be the u joints and to pull out the drive and have a look. what could be the problem? and is it easy to pull out the drive? oh and i took it out just recently after i got a new prop (the last prop was bad)to see if that was the problem and its still ther and it seems to be leaking a bit of water but not much. its never happend before? any ideas i could use the input and HELP??

thanks for the advice 83Evinrude is this something that i can do myself? is it easy? and should i do this befor i take the boat out again?thanks for replying so fast ive been busy!

Re: 2004 glastron- volvo penta sx rattling& shaking

The drive needs pulled and the U-joints and gimbal bearing checked ASAP!
If you keep running it the way you are doing now expect some very expensive repairs in the near future.

Pulling the drive is taking the back plastic cover off the upper part of the drive, unhook the shift linkage.
Remove the shift cable clip on the starboard side of the drive.
Unhook the rear of the trim rams.
Remove the 6 nuts that hold the drive on and pull it off.
A second person really helps but i have done many with no help.

My bet is the gimbal bearing is where the noise is but the u-joints need greased yearly anyway.

How long has it been since the bellows were replaced?
If they are original in a 2004 boat they are past the normal life span.
It is a good time to do those while the drive is off.

Do you have a service manual?

If not, look in the adults only section at the top of the forum.

Here is a thread that discusses the removal of the sx drive.

I would recommend removal and inspection yearly. That would include checking alignmnet. It's not a tough job at all.

The gimbal bearing is what the drive shaft rides in.Once the drive is removed reach in the hole and you will feel it.It should turn very smooth by hand.

If you tilt the drive up you will see the rubber bellows. The bottom is the exhaust the larger upper boot is the drive shaft bellow. It is the one that must be water tight. If not it destroys the u-joints,bearing and leaks water into the boat.
Water in there will also rust the drive shaft and take out the seals for it too.

My bet is water has got in and the gimbal bearing noise is the first sign.

You will need the service manual or take it to a shop that knows what they are doing.
