Re: glastron sportster xl
Welcome to I-boats, you will find all the advice you need here. On the transom, there are two basic routes, going back with wood or seacast (there are a couple other brands out there). Going back with wood more or less involves removing the old wood and replacing it. There are a lot of people on here who have done that and are happy with there results. I chose to do seacast on mine, doesn't rot....so I should be done with transom repairs forever. A couple of notes, if the transom is bad, more than likely the stringers are too.r. Mine was a little diffrent than most, I didn't have to split the hull. Given your hull configuration, I'm guessing you will need to do that.
The other question is usually epoxy or poly. I went with poly since that is what the hull was made of. Epoxy is stronger, but cost more. I did use epoxy as a glue in a few places, but all of my hull repairs were poly. If you go the poly route, buy "UN-waxed" resin. The stuff at home depot is waxed. The difference is that if you have waxed, you will have to grind and clean with acetone between coats. Unwaxed you just slap another coat on, trust me its worth finding the unwaxed...several places on the internet sell it or you maybe able to find it locally. Waxed resin is typically used for the last coat, as unwaxed is still sticky on the surface (hence why it bonds well with the next coat). Waxed gives a non-sticky surface, that is great for the final layer.
Good luck with your project......it might seem like a lot to bite off, but if you take it one step at a time it isn't bad at all!
