I picked this one up for $900 just before Thanksgiving last year. It has a solid Mercruiser 470 (NO comments from the peanut gallery!). The hull is in real good shape and there are no soft spots in the floor anywhere. The upholstery is shot as is the carpet. I vacuumed out all the leaves and other trash and this boat actually looks pretty nice!

Pictures will be posted as soon as I get it back home out of storage.

Has anyone used the Wise seat combos? The idea of plastic frames is appealing as the wood ones seem to be the first to go.

I will rebuild the doghouse with some fiberglas panels for lighter weight. I was also thinking of replacing one of the rear jump seats with a medium size livewell/bait tank.

Engine starts and purrs contentedly and has no leaks. No water in the oil and no excessive rust in the water. Ran it for almost one hour on muffs to distribute the Seafoam before storage and no overheating or drips anywhere. It was converted to freshwater cooling by the PO. Aside from the advantage of higher running temperature, is there any benefit to returning it to a closed cooling system?

The metal flake paint on the hull seems to be in fairly good shape so I will try to add an epoxy or urethane clear coat over it.

The PO put window tint on the wind screen. Any suggestions on how to remove it without replacing the glass?

Thanks for any help and advice!

PS: I should say that I am moderately to highly skilled in woodworking and electrical systems as well as a former mechanic.

Ayuh,... You mean the PO didn't wanta buy a heat exchanger, 'n bubblegumed it to a Raw water cooling,..??
As in whatever water is outside the hull,..??

Ya, yer gonna have Problems...
The 470s were Freshwater cooled because of the aluminum block, 'n cast iron heads...
Running it on raw water ain't gonna last very long....

Yer Welcome,..... From the Peanut Gallery.......
Come on over to the I/O forum for more brow beatin', 'n more reasons ya gotta fix it back to Factory, if ya want.....

Thanks. I had read that in the I/O forums as well but it was glossed over. I have the heat exchanger but i think he said it leaked. I will have to get it out and see if i can weld/braze it.

Yes. For the price they're tough to beat. Had these in my last boat:

The only problem I had was I made the mistake of storing a battery in the base of one of the jumps. The battery banging around sorta blew apart the base. It was easily repaired but you might want to avoid doing something similarly dumb.

I used them in my Bayliner rebuild, I thought they were very nice & good quality as well.

Thanks for the info and photos. How good is the vinyl and mounting?

My battery has its own battery box with hold downs in the rear so I don't think that will be a problem!

The vinyl is the best part. Very nice. The mounting strips are pretty weak, but they get the job done. Dead simple to install. 4 lag bolts or toggle bolts and you're done.

That Bayliner rebuild shore was a pretty boat! I just sold my Bayliner 1400 which received a cheap rebuild. The interior was trash and the complete rebuild (new seats, carpet, some plywood, etc, only cost about $200.

The Glastron has old gray carpet in it right now. Since i plan to use it for fishing and hauling a tube around (it will get wet inside a lot, I think), would there be a better alternative for the decking? I was looking at that epoxy garage floor paint with the non-skid flakes in it.

Don't use the garage paint. It's too brittle and many of them aren't particularly UV resistant. There are lots of other options. Rustoleum with sand in it, Durabak, Kiwi Grip, Bass Pro/Cabelas/Overtons each have their own brand of non-slip coating, or marine vinyl. I used marine vinyl on mine and am very happy with it. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2504.jpg

I love that Bayliner 1400...perfect first boat for my son...but since I have 2 Glastron Carlson's already...I'm sure he'll claim one here soon.

I used Durabak Smooth on my 1600 rebuild, it was good, I would use a Grey if I was to use it again, the white tended to stain. I'd recommend it.

After stripping it out, I found that the wood is all in great condition except for the little rotted ends of the flake board where the rear seats sat. That will all be gone when I install the single seats in the rear.

Any one know what the equivalent 4 blade prop would be for the 470?

On the to-do list:

new carpet
new seats
install heat exchanger
new prop
new spark plugs
electronic ignition
repair small chips in glass.
fix tach
fix broken switch mountings in dash
mount coolant overflow res.

A million other small things!

Man you dodged a BULLET with all that solid wood. I would probably consider adding an additional layer of glass to that deck just to help keep it that way.

Yea, That was one of the things I checked pretty thoroughly before buying. I went all over the boat bouncing on one foot looking for soft spots.

I am thinking of putting a layer of glass on the bare wood parts but a lot of the old floor adhesive has soaked into the wood so getting it down to bare wood might be difficult. There is a tool called a Woodpecker that is used to poke a lot of small holes in wood for model airplanes. I wonder if there is something like this for plywood? That would help adhesion of the resin.

Has anyone seen one of those old paint strippers that you used to get at the dollar stores? I am talking about the ones that you would put in an electric drill and it had a bunch of loose wires that would beat off the old paint? I tried looking online and nothing showed up. I used to have one a long time ago but I don't think it is in my arsenal any more.

4" heat exchanger bought off eBay and should be here in a week or so. Wife can't decide what color she wants for the upholstery! Waffling between teal and sea green. I can't order the seats until she decides.

I found out it has a 15" pitch prop. Shop said to run it with that one for a baseline then come back for prop recommendations. Sounds like a good plan.

4" heat exchanger installed. For any of you converting either direction (raw water or fresh water), there is a plate between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust elbow. With this in place, you run the heat exchanger. If you want to run raw water cooling, you have to remove it.

Re: Glastron SSV-177XL restore project starting this weekend

I have a SSV 197 With a 200HP Johnson on it and I use a 19" Stainless prop for general boating, 21" Stainless for speed and a 17" Stainless for towing tubes, wakerboarding, etc. They are all 3 blade props. 15" seems a little small for that boat IMO.

As for the seats, I would go with 2 tone grey to match the outside of the boat.
Here is my thread that shows what seats I went with. SSV197
