Glastron vs Searay

Hey guys as you see I am still looking for a boat.I am currently looking at a 2000 Glastron GS249 with 5.0 merc that has 95 hours, overall boat is in nice shape. the question is I see some Searay Sundancers out there about 96-97 with about 400 hours close to the same price about 22,0000. Should I go with newer Glastron or better quality older Searay???<br /><br />Sorry for the second post on same subject but this question was slightly different and this is now my main concern<br /><br />Thanks<br />COOL IT

thats a lot of years of were and tear on the searay drive train<br /><br />i am a long island guy to and theres a lot of searays and in reality like any other boat they suffer the same problems any ageing boat has <br /><br /><br />tommays

while not always absolutely true, a boat's reputation doesn't mean too much when it comes to used boats. it really depends on the current condition of each boat.<br /><br />a 2000 with only 95 hours has only seen 19 hours each season, or maybe it was 50 hours the first season/20 the next/and nearly nothing since. impossible to tell from here.<br /><br />i'd rather a boat that has been run consistently and hasn't sat for awhile but don't take that to mean i'd pick the glastron. need to inspect and compare them both.<br /><br />at 5 years apart in age and priced nearly the same, what's the difference between the 2?

Thanks so far guys !!! any other opinions out there. I am leaning toward the Glastron with 95 hours- but might look at a Wellcraft Coastal tonight. I still want a fishing type with some amenities but my wife wants the cruiser type with some space to fish- who is going to win??

Well I can vouch for the wellcraft coastal. I have a 1997 wellcraft Excel (before they called it the coastal). My neighbor has the 'coastal' version a couple docks down. Exact same boat, screw for screw, part for part.<br /><br />Anyway, the 23 excel/240 coastal is a great boat, I bought my 1997 last october for $18,000. Immaculate boat. And the wife is ahppy because it has a very decent cabin, with head, sink, stove, and comvertible table. I'm happy because it has a lot of room to fish, full canvas, etc. <br /><br />Seaswirl is nice too but typically more $$.

The Searay costs more to begin with. Compare each boat (the actual boat) and decide. The Glastron is a "cheaper boat" but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't meet your needs. Do you need a Corian countertop in the galley? I don't. Decide which deck and cabin layout you prefer. Do a sea trial if possible. Despite some workmanship quality issues, I am satisfied with my Glastron considering the purchase price.

Your wife's opinion is going to matter down the road so be sure she is happy with the decision. It should be a family decision. Mine was and my wife loves to go out on the boat. The starboard seat reclines for sunbathing. She likes that. Also, the enclosed head with china bowl.<br /><br />Never a problem buying what's needed or spending too much time working on it, either.
