Glow Plugs-AQAD41A ?

Mine never worked.
How are they supposed to work, is there a timer or a controller ? Is there anything to control burn time or is that done manually by holding the key in a certain position?
How do I trouble shoot this? The manual doesn't give much info on the glow plug system.
I'm guessing remove a glow plug and hook it to a battery and see if it gets hot, then go from there.
Is there an aftermarket replacement glow plug?

Sorry just noticed your post. Finding an electrical schematic for a Volvo diesel is a bit hard if not impossible. All diesels with glow plugs work basically the same it's just the method by which they are controlled differs. I was able to find the component breakdown but that is about it. The manual list the following

Insert the key in the ignition switch. Turn key to the “I” position. The three warning lamps come on and can be checked (after approximately 20 seconds the high coolant temperature warning light will go out). Check that the acoustic alarm is operating by pressing the “Alarm Test” button.

If the engine has glow plugs installed (option) turn the key to position “II”. The indicator light comes on and the glow plugs are connected to pre-heat the engine. Let the glow plugs remain activated for approximately 30 seconds.

Turn the key to position “III” to start. Release the key as soon as the engine has started, the key will automatically spring back to the “I” position. If the engine did not start the key must first be turned to the “0” position before trying again.

You can down load the manuals DonS placed in Google 4 share from a previous thread below. (Note link below is for reference only, please don't post to it)

To add, when your key is in position II it should apply voltage to the glow plug relay. The glow plug relay will then send battery voltage directly to the glow plug.

Those are not actually glow plugs. They are pre-heaters in the intake manifold that were optional on the 41 series. Unless you are trying to start in extremely low temperatures, you shouldn't need them. I've seen a few of them that have broken and the pieces have gone into the cylinders causing havoc.

Correct, the parts manual calls them glow plugs,,,so I went with that. I do know the difference. Sitting 3 days with out starting in low 40 degree weather and it is hard to start, but it will start. When it does start lots of smoke and rough running engine until it runs a couple minutes, then smooths out but still a lot of smoke until temp comes up to 130 or so . I have a Ford truck diesel, when started cold the glow plugs cycle on and off after the engine has started , makes the cold start much smoother.
If my boat system is totally manual and they do not cycle after started,,,,I have no interest or need to fix them. And I wouldn't fix them unless I could find another source, Volvo wants $200 each , I see many similar intake heaters for $40, but they aren't painted green ;)
Thanks for the help!

They still work like glow plugs and for the most part do the same thing, they heat up the air (glow plug in the cylinder, preheater in the intake). Any amount of additional heat on cold days is helpful when starting a diesel as you know with your ford. My dodge has a grid heater as yours does and cycles on and off until it warms up. The Volvo is noted to smoke until they get warmed up. I'll look around and see if another source can be found for the "pre heaters".

Been doing a lot of looking but coming up empty. All sales are around the 200 and sum figure. Guess Volvo has the parts locked up

Are you sure that the heaters are bad or just the wiring of the system? Unscrew them and be careful but use jump leads positive and negative and see if they heat[glow]. Could just be relay or wiring issue.

That's the plan,,,,, take them out and bench test them, after making sure there is power getting to them,,by the way where is the relay located?

The black relay should be attached to the front lifting eye or on top of thermostat housing on injection pump side.
