if i were to glue some carpet to the seats for some kind of padding (aluminum seats) what kind of glue or adhesive whould i be looking at? or is there a better way? and if down the road i wanted to take the carpet out and there was glue residue on the seats ,is there something that will take the glue off with out harming the aluminum?

Every thing you use will leave a residue. I have used outdoor carpet adhesive. It bonds very well. You can also buy carpet adhesive remover that works great and will not harm the aluminum. It will remove any paint though. I have also used contact adhesive with success. Just remember contact adhesive bond instantly, no repositioning. That can be a good thing or bad ;).

What about gluing some strips of velcro to the seat and stitch to carpet then you can change padding at any time ? just a thought I have never done it.

the 2" wide industrial adhesive velcro you can get at lowes, home depot, etc... is great stuff. it's what held the cushions on my bucket seats al llast season... holds the big bulletin boards in my home office to the wall, etc....

The airlines also use velcro to attach the seat cushions to the metal pans underneath. It really is pretty good stuff.

I agree with the velcro idea but if you want to glue it down make sure you don't go above 20oz carpet and use 3M 80 spray glue. To remove it use M.E.K. (Methyl Ethyl Keytone). You can get both at Home Depot.

If it was going to be more permanent you would use a good indoor/outdoor carpet glue. MEK takes that off too.
