my buddy called as said he might be looking at an 88 Bayliner with an 305 V8 Merc. A1... was wondering if $2k was decent?

told him to check the floor and bilge for rot, check the bellows, and def. do a compression check on the engine b/c its been sitting for 3-4yrs.....anything else I should mention or any tips about the motor? was just wondering if its a good motor i'm assuming it is since its a GM block if properly taken care of....

Thanks for all and any info it is much appreciated

Re: GM 305 V8 ...reliable?

I'm not trying to get on anyone's case here, but I don't see any one replying how they got a boat running after it sat for a time. They seem to ask what to do next to bring it back to life.

The 305 is a decent engine, but you are trying to restore it in a Bayliner, and both are 20 years old.Could you advise me on a 20 year old car with out knowing the milage ?

I wish I could give you more hope.

Re: GM 305 V8 ...reliable?

Is a 305 reliable if properly maintained? YES

Is sitting untouched, for 3-4 years after an unknown amount of pre-storage prep was done, considered properly maintained? NO

At best, you've got a 50/50 shot at having a good engine here.
