I have recently replaced my long block with a remanned by Jasper. I have had other posts asking about problems on the original block. The engine is a 1994 Volvo Penta Gipmda. I cant get it to run evenly enough to set the timing. I am getting code 42 (electronic spark timing) and code 43(electronic spark control). I believe the code 43 is because of the knock sensor, it is rusted and not looking happy. I am going to replace it in spring time. I think the code 42 means that the ignition control module also has to be replaced? I would also like to know if there is a way to test my pickup coil? If anyone has any ideas on anything else to check i would appreciate any help on this matter.Thanks.

Re: GM OBD codes 42 and 43

Hi there, what engine size/model do you have?

Have you checked to make sure the ground wires to the ECM are in good shape, tight, etc.?

Do you have the volvo EFI service manual? Boatinfo - Volvo Penta MD series Engine TBI Service Manual

Sounds like you may have an open in the IC line (ignition control wire or module) from the ecm to the IC module.

Chances are slim that there is an actual problem with the knock sensor or pick up coil.

It seems like more of a backed out wire pin connection in a plug connector or damaged wire going to either one or both circuits whether it be power, ground or signal circuit or it could be a bad ignition control module.

There is lots of testing to follow in the EFI service manual.

It is a 1994 volvo penta 5.7 Gipmda. I will check all the connections paying close attention to the pins in the connection. I will also download the manuals you left an attachment to. Thanks.
