Hasn't anyone (other than me) wondered as to the fate of the Mercruiser line?

Given that Washington is now calling the 'shots' at GM...and pleasure boating is not considered a 'green' hobby...I have to assume that the Mercruiser line will get the axe.

Anyone heard anything...? :(

Why would Merc get the axe? They are separate from GM.
I dont think Merc is going anywhere. GM will continue to make engines and Merc will use whatever they make. Who knows, they might start using something else besides GM.

I think merc has been thinking a head and coming up with there own stuff to make work. But the last thing I herad they might be putting on a blower on top of the newer 6.2 that they run in the denali to replace the 8.1/496 GM was planning on droping even before all of this big mess they are in.

GM is not going anywhere. They are restructuring under bankrupcty protection. They're come out a smaller company that's all. Won't effect Mercruiser or Volvo in the least.

There lies my concern...GM is being 'forced' to drop their smaller volume products, and their EPA unfriendly products. Marine engines fit both of these thresholds.

From The Stillwater Press (home of Mercruiser), dated April 08, 2009:

"Stillwater?s Mercury MerCruiser plant has laid off about 135 workers this week, the company confirmed.

Affected are about 120 production employees and 15 salary employees, said Human Resources Director Jamie Payne. The workforce drops to around 400.

The positions were eliminated because of a ?continued weak demand throughout the global and North American recreational-boating industries,? Payne said.

MerCruiser manufactures sterndrive engines."

This appears to be the fourth series of layoffs, since last August.

The 3.0L engine doesn't seem to have much of an application...outside of the boating world. As the demand for boats drops, GM has to rethink the need to make this engine....

And don't forget the power that the environmentalists wield in Washington....

This might be a stupid question given the title of this thread, but are most MerCruisers actually GM engines?

Moving to Dockside Chat, this has nothing to do with repair of any kind.

But Jason, considering the 6.2 is made from the 350, how would it exist if the 350 disappeared????

Rocky, I understand your concern, but I don't think it'll get that far. The Feds are going to be satified with their mandates of catalytic convertors for several years. They "greened" up this part of boating. next are catalytic convertors for outboards. That'll satisfy them for several more years.
As stated above GM is not going to cease to exist. And even if it did, some privateer would buy the rights, tooling, and the plant in Mexico, and keep maiking 350's. Anyone want to go in on that with me?

without a doubt the SBC probably has one of the highest production numbers of any engine ever. I bet if you took every SBC and stacked them in one place we'd have a polar shift :D

THE 3.0 HAS A huge INDUSTRIAL use in pumps ,forktrucks ,and other stationary installs

And i would think they make some money on it as there is nor real R&D required

Well, there dang well ought to be. The flathead was only made for 21 years. Those wonderful little chebby small blocks have been made for how long? Over 50? But they are not all 350s by a long shot.

Re: GM's about gone...what about Mercruiser???

thank you for making my point agian jb
ok take away the all the other sb chevs and the 350 still has to be on of the most prolific power plants of all time

the first sb chev i rember came out in "54" maybe? it was a 265

lets see wasnt that about the time ford came with the 292 Y block to replace the flat heads?
