Well i went to split my pre alpha MC1 drive and the allen bolt that holds the anode fin in stripped. I cleaned it out good and the allen wrench felt like a good tight fit. Without to to much pressure it stripped out. If i had to guess It looks like a steel bolt some knuckle head put in there. from what i can see in the hole it looks crusty/rusty. Should i drill down through with a 3/8s bit or? Any tricks?

Re: Go Figure Stripped anode bolt

easest way is to simply cut the anode off the old fashioned way, a sharp chisel and a hammer. go in from the side and simply split it. lucky Zinc is really rather soft.
wasnt an aftermarket bolt, I cut a few off every year.

bummer man. mine was feelin like it was gettin stripped too last spring so i left well enough alone till fall. i was lucky, i got it loose (much pb blaster prior too and a new allen wrench)..... my fall back plan if it stripped was what rodbolt is talkin about..... though i was gonna use a die grinder to cut it off..... it is soft..... i wanted mine off last spring so i could put the short one on to compensate for a new (used) prop.... i ended up just grinding away enough to compensate for the prop. it grinds easy.... good luck with the chisel or grinder......

That bolt is suppose to be stainless isn't it?

I'm not real sure about the older ones, but when you get it off and split the case, install a new one.
One trick I have used, but you need to be careful, is to melt the old zinc anodes off with a torch.
Don't even think about breathing the fumes, do it out in the open with a fan and a mask.

hello,

another way that may work is to use a cut off bit in a dremel. i had a stuck nut that no matter what i tried would not come loose on rusted bolt thread. so i went into nut side with a dremel cut off saw disc... did both sides and she oppened up. could screw it off albiet very lopsided... lol

but it came off.

good luck

Re: Go Figure Stripped anode bolt

DO NOT use neversieze for something like that. That's the best thing to cause it to never come loose again. It is then called Eversieze.
Use some grease on the bolt.

Re: Go Figure Stripped anode bolt

Why? Does it have a chemical breakdown with salt? Used it forever on auto/truck works like a charm. I'm not doubting you just curious why? Thanks

Bit like those tools I see people using, "Easy-outs". What a misnomer!!!

Just use a water-proof grease on the bolt and when you do the annual service (that's each year!) it'll come out nice and easy.... :D

Eversieze has copper and nickel in it... You'll just be adding yet more metals to that underwater battery you have. :D

I don't know why, don't even care. All I know is it should NEVER be used on anything on boats that is also in the water.
Go find out for yourself. It shouldn't take long.

PS: It also has zinc in it.

Oh i'll use grease, I trust your experience Don. I stll have to wonder why though huh? May be electrlosis? I'm sure I spelled that wrong, oh well. Thanks

Re: Go Figure Stripped anode bolt

if you must use never seize make sure its a nickel base with NO copper in a petroleum grease base, not a lithium.
I just use either special lube 101,24c with teflon or yamalube waterproof grease. its quick simple and I can usually find one of the tubes in the shop somewhere.
a note about 101, its nasty to get off your hands, but place it on a bolt, put it underwater and a year later its still there and still just as greasy.

Of course it's electrolosis (doesn't matter how it's spelled, I know what you meant) That is the problem with all those different types of metals under the water.
I suppose some physics major somewhere in some university may be able to figure out a way to use that energy of corroding metals into mush as a way of charging your battery by decaying your outdrive.

Re: Go Figure Stripped anode bolt

!101 is great stuff. We use a grease very similar offshore, called Aqualube. Can't buy it on Oz, don't know why... But I have a reasonable quantity stored at home (should last me a couple of lifetimes :D). I've used it on the trailer rollers for the last 10 years. Rebuilt the trailer last Sept and the grease was still as good as the day I put it on....
