Well, I'm back into fishing after a long layoff (years & years). I'm taking the family to the lake this weekend for some fun and would like to catch some fish. The lake we visit is known for bass, stripers and catfish. I've never been much of a bass fisherman, so my skills are lacking.

I have bought a few crankbaits and artificial worms and I have live worms and livers for the cats. I am also planning on getting some small shad for the bass and stripers.

Any hints on lures, best times of day, or any other comments would be appreciated.

Try using beetlespins. I like medium size yellow and black or orange and black. Cast to the weed line and retrieve. This lure catches all species. You can troll with them as well. If you troll around the weed lines you will usually find a largemouth. Scum frogs in the weeds are fun as well. When the bass hit them it sounds like a firecracker going off.

just go for the cats. i like 3-4 inch live sunfish. whole shad works, but just keep them fresh. if you dont catch one within 15 minutes, change spots and bait.

but plastic worms, spinnerbaits, crankbaits will work for the bass. for the small shad for the bass and stripers, i have more luck with the bigger ones. agian keep them fresh.
