Going to look @ a '95 Sea Ray 175 tomorrow - questions

First off... Hi everyone, my first post on iboats.com I've been luring the past week after my family and I decided we'd like to get a boat. So, we're looking at our first boat. While we can afford new, and having the warm fuzzy feeling of a new boat with warranty and no unknown history (unmolested as I like to call it), we're looking at used boats too, then sell off and trade up in a year or 2 if the allure is still there (this is generally not my MO, as I normally buy what I want the fist time new and then keep it "until the wheels fall off" and then go a little further).

We are going to look at a 1995 Sea Ray 175 with 3.0 mercruiser... new prop, new plugs, oil change recently done according to owner. He's the 2nd owner and looks to be getting out of boating after selling off their lake house. Throwing in all of their equipment with it (PFDs, skis, some sort of inflatable towable, etc). Asking $5700, we got him down to $4800 over teh phone and could maybe work on him some more. My wife is the master negotiator in our family, so I'll let her work him over while I check things out. The owner did say that the mechanic that serviced it thought it had a lifter causing a ticking when he had it serviced last, but was going to wait until fall to get fixed if he still had it. From pictures, it looks like it was well maintained (not sure about the 1st owner, but this guy kept it in a covered lift at their lake house until they recently sold it. He did admit that it has a small rip in the vinyl on the engine cover, but the seats are all in good shape.

So I have a few questions...
1. Is that price ($4800) about right for this boat?
2. Should I be looking for a newer boat for a first boat? is a 15 year old boat at an age where it's going to give me trouble? I wrench om my cars/trucks/motorcycles on my own, but don't want to get a bad taste in my mouth for boating by buying someone else problem for my first boat.
3. Should I be really concerned about the possible lifter issue if that's truely what it is? I know it could be something worse, but probably wouldn't know until it was too late.
4. Anything specific about this year/model that I need to go over extra close on?

Thanks, Bryce

My uncle has that exact boat (same year, motor everything). He has had it since new. He has a cottage on the water and is really into watersports. That boat has been used HARD and I mean hard every year since it was new and he has had very few issues with it. The 3.0 performs very well in it.

However, I think that price is too high. I would think around $3500 would be more appropriate. Also that tick would be worrysome and I think I'd want my own mechanic to take a look at it before purchasing. As with any boat that age your main concern is wood rot. Make sure the transom and deck are solid. Soft spots = HUGE project. That being said, a wall maintained older boat can be much better than a neglected newer boat.

I just purchased a 1995 Sea Ray 195 and am not looking back. If well taken care of and you are capable of doing some work on your own, I see no reason why a 15 yr old boat is a bad choice. The 195 is my first boat.

Consider having a marine inspector look it over, probably money well spent. As for the ticking, I would not be comfortable with it until a mechanic I trust gave it a look.

As for rot, I believe yours has a fiberglass deck, but give it a good check. The wood over the ski locker will be telling as well.

Check the bellows, these should be replaced at approx 5 yr intervals. I made the dealer replace mine before signing the papers. Do you know when they were last replaced?

Does the engine compartment look clean?

EDIT: you can grab the original sales brochure and other material off the Sea Ray website.

Below is my new to me 1995 Sea Ray 195.

Well.. we talked ourselves out of this one. I think we should look at something newer and something without potential engine issues.

Gonna go look at some newer used boats and some new "entry level" boats this weekend.

I would look for something in a 20' or larger. Smaller than that and they will pound you to death in all but the calmest water. They also get really crowded when you put 4 or 5 people on them. Hence the term "2 footitis" which usually happens just months after taking ownership. In other words, buy your next boat first, it's a lot cheaper that way.

Also, if you wait a month or so the prices will drop quite a bit. Summer is when prices are highest.

Well... right or wrong decision on size & new vs. used, we are happy with it. We got a '09 Bayliner 175. A neighbor of ours is a salesman at a dealership and we got a fair deal and he made some money for his work with us. Having an unmolested boat (or car/truck/camper/motorcycle/etc) just makes us feel better an add to the enjoyment for us(except for paying for it :D)... no worries that someone has done something stoopid to it (remember those carfax commercials like the one where the guy let his dog drive teh truck into the pond?)

We had it out Sunday and ran a tank full through it. The kids enjoyed it and we had a good time. The only issues I've found have been a MP3/AUX jack plugged up wrong (2 sets of wires they could have plugged into in the head unit and they chose the wrong one.. 30 second fix) and I could use an extra step on the swim ladder to get on easier (the steps could be more comfortable too).

It's a now frills boat and we didn't get/need a lot of options. We got the Galvanized trailer, Bimini Top and Radio.

It's plenty light enough to be pulled by our Ford Edge (3500lbs towing capacity). So when we want to take the camper to the lake, I cam pull it with my F-250 and then pull the boat with the car rather than running back and forth.

Nice looking boat. The galv trailer an bimini top are the most important options anyway I think. Good job.
