Golden Meteor Identification

Hi folks. I am trying to help my dad indentify this old Johnson. He says the plug on the top of the motor is: J2810716

but no other #'s on the plug. He also thinks that it is a 95HP but I don't seem to be able to find 95HP for a Golden Meteor Electra Matic.

We're looking to replace the impellor and put it back in service. It's been stored for an unkown amount of time but very clean. He got it at an auction.

I'm pretty sure he said the lower unit was dark green. This leads me to believe it is a 68 100HP.

Where might we find more numbers on the powerhead to identify it?

Also, I assume this is a 50:1 mix motor not an older 24:1?

Thanks,
Bill(s)

Re: Golden Meteor Identification

The mixture is indeed graduated up to 50/1 as the powerhead incorporates "all" needle, roller, and ball bearings.

The type 100hp model was manufactured in 1966-67-68.

The 1966 model had a huge heavy 20amp stator under the flywheel, and a finned solid state voltage regulator attached to the rear baffle plate area of the powerhead.

The 1977 model has a smaller 15 amp stator under the powerhead and no regulator.

The 1968 model had the distributor cap under the flywheel whereas the other two models has a belt driven distributor located at tha rear portion of the powerhead.

Now..... Let us know which you have.

look for a plate under the front of the motor, where it mounts to the transom

Re: Golden Meteor Identification

Thanks for the speedy reply guys.

I am in AZ, he is in NY. He doesn't know a transom for a hole in the water. I told him there should be something on the motor near the transom but I can't describe it any better than that to him to try and find it. I'm lucky he found the plug on the top. Parents can be so frustrating to have... :)

Either way I'm assuming you have to drop the lower end on this to get to the impeller? I'm ordering the SELOC book as soon as we narrow down what it is exactly. I just don't want him to run it without changing that first.

I'll be back with numbers or if it has a belt distributor.

Thanks again,
Bill

tell him to look under the front of the motor where it sits on the boat, or on the side of that piece of metal on the outside. there are some on the side of the transom mount also.

Re: Golden Meteor Identification

He said he remembers seeing something about a belt when he was under the covers so I'm guessing it is a 1967 due to the color scheme.

Which is the right SELOC book to get him? There is this one:

1306 Johnson/Evinrude 50-125 hp 3 and 4 cylinder 2-stroke Outboards 1958-1972 Repair Manual ASIN: B0001WTJRM

and the there is this one:

Johnson/Evinrude Outboards, 3-4 Cylinders, 1958-72 (Vol 3 (1958-72)) (Paperback) ISBN-10: 0893300098

I'm looking on amazon. I don't understand the difference between the 2 books.

Thanks again guys.
