Hanna a 1yr 10month old fieldset golden has developed a strange dry scab behind her right ear on her neck.

I found this during the weekly tick check and it is not something that she is scratching or seems bothered by. It isn't a long scratch like deal, more like a letter F with the top extended. 2" long and not very painful.. It looks like a bunch of little scabs (50-60) rather than one long one associated with her cutting herself.

Dog's overall health and demeanor is fine but cuz there is no definate shape I am worried about a disease. The internet is like a million sites on how great they are. No difinitive information.

Dog lives in Wisconsin and hasn't done anything unusual like at week trip to the woods. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

might be remnants of a hot spot that is on the mend, or scab from a insect bite, i treat my dogs with gold bond powder,or cream, store brand is ok too. if its still wet it need to dry, if its real crusty it need to soften. use the cream.
gave two goldens away yesterday, just two left, not into dogs anymore.

wajajaja,

Thanks for the quick feedback. I shaved the area but it is still mosty covered with the longer surface hair. (Like Donald Trumps head) It seems like it is very dry and not moist at all.. Tried removing a small scab and it bled a little but no apparent pain. Once again very dry.

It appears almost black in color. How quick do these thing pop up and disappear. Sounds as if you have done some breeding in the past. My book " Goldens for Dummies touches on hot spots but rather vague. Thanks again.

Re: Golden Retriever with strange marks

When our puppies get an odd skin problem, rash, scab, or crustiness, the first thing I do is get out the sulfur dip, and apply some diluted dip to the affected area. So for it has worked every time. Every time I took them to the vet with any of the above mentioned skin problems the vet always suggested the sulfur dip, so now I use that first, and consult the vet if it doesn't work. It doesn't smell bouquet or roses, but at least it works.

SW,

Where do you get the ingredients for a sulfer dip. Something you can get at PETCO or is this a vet only thing?

wajajaja,
Went to the 24hr walgreens and pick up the gold bond creame last night. Thanks for the tip. :)
Thanks

My cat has a "hot spot" under his chin. Our vet told us to clean it out daily with regular acne face pads (Oxy or Clearicil--lots of alcohol) than put an anti-bacterial cream on it. I would make sure that either the dog can't lick the spot, or the cream you use is non-toxic. This has seemed to help and the spot is clearing up. You may want to take the dog to the vet to make sure the spot is nothing serious.

you could bring the dog to a vet. i would be upset if my owner guessed at do-it-yourself methods to cure my ailments. not meant to be a smartazz response, just a simple solution to me.

nah, the vet is gonna start small too but charge alot more than the drug store. i'd go the over-the-counter route first too. dogs are very durable and will let you know if something is seriously wrong.....if it isn't tender or infected, it's probably not much.

any fleas around? could the dog have scratched itself behind the ear too much?
