gonna try this one more time, then I am giving up

I posted about this awhile back, but got no response. 1971 3 cyl 60hp hydroelectric shift. Motor has good fuel, spark, compression, battery. carbs are turned out to about 1.5 turns out. It will start with the throttle advance lever activated, run for 5-15 seconds and then die. I think it is just a timing/link & sync issue, but I have never started from scratch on one of these projects. Is there a link & sync instruction link on this site? Does this sound like it is the issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

im assuming you have tried pumping the primer bulb after it starts to see if there is any change? i admittedly know very little about your model, but from what you describe it sounds like its running out of fuel or flooding out.

never tried pumping it while it is running but after it dies the bulb still has pressure. it seems to start when I manually advance the timing at the motor for a while and runs at a pretty high rpm for a while, then when you try to idle it down it wil just die. There are two marks on the "throttle cam plate thingy" is am assuming the roller is supposed to be one one mark at high idle and the other mark at regular idle.

Will it keep running if you choke it ??

honestly, thats prly the one thing we didnt try. Also when it is running it doesnt sound the smoothest either. I will have to try choking it and see if that makes it run longer. If that does make it run longer then it is prly running too lean, right? so should I adjust the carb out another 1/2 turn?

There is much more to the link & sync than just those marks. To tell the truth, I'd have to get the book out myself (and I no longer have the book). But, I don't think that is your problem anyway.

I think 1 1/2 turns is way too much on the needles. If I remember correctly, 5/8 turn is the initial setting.

The ignition system on that motor is a pain. It has to be just right, or it won't run. Even if just right, it won't run worth a hoot with the original surface gap spark plugs. If they are still in there, throw them away and install L77JC4 or QL77JC4 plugs, gapped .030" to .040" Have you had the flywheel and distributor cap off to clean and adjust everything? Breaker point gap is .009". Anti-revers ring must be lubricated very sparingly with EP grease. Test the spark plug wires, and put some grease under the boots at the dist cap to prevent arcing out.

Those motors are responsible for many of these grey hairs that I have. Good luck.

I would guess that it's starving for fuel. Make sure floats are set correctly....and that needle/seat are in good shape(not clogged etc)

Put some premix gas in a spray bottle, start the motor and spray the premix in the carb in bursts to try and keep it running....if the motor stays running then it's def a fuel delivery problem.

yeah I cleaned the carb about 2 months ago and it was running took it out on the lake and drove all over, let it sit for a few weeks, went to go fishing and all the motor would do is run for a few min at the boat ramp then die, over and over. Thought maybe the plugs were the issuse so bought the flat style ones, but I guess i'll trash em aand get another set.

Make a couple spray bottles and have a friend help...or just spray each one quickly. It's just a quick test to see if it tries to run when fed fuel.

Somthing else to consider is the fuel lines, if they predate ethanol enhanced gasoline, they could be breaking up and clogging the carb passages. Even if this isnt the cause, if you have old fuel lines, replace them all before they cause you grief.

yeah we replaced all the fuel lines and we dont use ethanol in our outboards. I even made sure the tank fittings were factory, not some aftermarket crap that leaks air. I guess I didnt set the floats, but I figured they were fine before, so I didnt mess with them, because I didn't know what they needed to be set at, but I assure you the rest of the carbs were cleaned from head to toe. Do you really think I need to pull the flywheel and check the points gapping and get rid of the flat style spark plugs that are brand new?

it ran well then 2 weeks later it wouldnt stay running. try draining the fuel from the carb bowls there should be a drain screw on each. if you can catch the fuel do so then put it in a glass and look for small round bubbles. im not sure what what the humidity is like where you are but in florida its normal to get water in the carb after a very short lay up especially if you are not running a addative in the fuel. once drained reprime the carbs and see if its any better.
