From Associated Press ...
"Embattled US Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez shocked the Justice Department press corps at a hastily arranged press conference today when he announced that he will be leaving his post effective immediately. He cited personal reasons and answered no questions.
Speculation is that Gonzalez is resigning because his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 13 had been called into question by testimony given late last week by a key Justice Department aide. However Gonzalez rebuked that assertation as he left the podium citing a "family crisis".
Comment from White House spokesman Tony Snow is expected later today with President Bush scheduling a press conference of his own for early next week, presumably to announce a replacement.
Former Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers is expected by many to be named as Gonzalez's replacement.
That choice would require no confirmation hearings under provisions of the Patriot Act and Miers could concievably assume the duties of acting Attorney General almost immediately. Miers could not be reached for comment."
