I have a 1984 70hp Evinrude and I just started it up for the first time this year. I let it run for 2 or 3 mins to let it warm up and get rid of the fogging oil and then pulled the spark plugs and did a compression test. Top 141 Middle 145 Bottom 139. From what I've seen these are good numbers for a 23 year old motor. Are these numbers right or are they high because there was still some fogging oil left in the motor. Would it be better to give it a good run on the lake and then test again? BTW The compression tester is new.

Relax, the numbers are great. Put the tester away and get the motor ready for this season!

Re: Good compression ?

that's the reason for fogging, keep things lubbed, so they work correctly. great compression. have you ever done a decarb? look it up in the engine faq fourm.

Run her around the lake a few times.2 to 3 minutes running does very little to get the pistons and rings up to temp, and that makes compresion, and that is what you are trying to test.

Do I really need to do a decarb with numbers like this.
