Well, so the boat is FINALLY running, and almost running perfectly (almost). A rundown of the offseason/early season:
1. End of october. blew out my outdrive. Craigslist drive #1 had an input shaft seal leak, awaiting repair. Craigslist drive #2, though the wrong 2:1 ratio, seems to be running well (final cost after selling prop: $15). I did buy a new SS 23p prop to make up for the lower gear ratio. Water pump replaced.
2. Suspected leaking riser gasket. Replaced riser/manifold gaskets. Manifold gasket leaked again, hydrolocked engine, suspect I blew out exhaust gasket again trying to start. Replaced both again. Seems to be leak-free.
3. Hesitation on acceleration. Purchased rebuilt ebay carb while rebuilding old one. Hesitation gone.
4. Dealt final blow to kinked fuel line while swapping carb. Replaced after losing memorial day weekend. boo.
5. Put in electronic ignition, replaced fuel filter, new oil, gear oil, antifreeze, new plugs, set timing.
6. No spark. Bad wiring harness. Couldn't repair, spliced wires together outside harness.
7. Bad trim position and limit sensors. Managed to clean TPS sensor, and spliced the broken wires in the limit sensor (we'll see how long that repair lasts).
8. Misc electrical gremlins, most of them vanquished now.
9. Turning over slow. Cured with new battery.
10. Blown speakers (4 of them!). 2 new ones, and 2 new woofers for the tower speakers. Plus a new ebay deck.
End result: 2 days of lovely boating. Went 30 miles on day 1, only 5 on day 2. Several WOT runs, looks like I'm touching 47 mph with a full tank of gas at 4500 rpm. Also, as soon as I fill up i'm going to be able to give an accurate gauge of this engine's fuel economy. I estimated 4-5 mpg last year. Caught a dozen crabs day 1, and a bunch of croaker on day 2. Woo hoo! Next up: Waterskiing on the new ski. Also, maybe i'll actually turn the radio on instead of constantly listening to the engine for signs of distress...
