I wanted to report on a great charter fishing trip I just had when diving/fishing in Cozumel. I had a hard time finding any info on good charters in this area, so I hope to help some fishermen in the future who has that same problem.

We fished with Wasabi Loco fishing charter service located in Playa Aventuras, MX. This is a convenient place to come to from Cozumel, Cancun, or Playa del Carmen.

Anyway, I set up everything with Richard (an American who has "retired" to Mexico). Communciation was excellent in setting up the trip. they have several boats available - from small boats thru about 50' boats. We fished on the Wasabi Loco - which is a 32' Blackfin.

I have fished a lot of charters around the world. I must say that this boat and the fishing tackle were top notch - all brand new Shimano reels. The captain and crew - 2 mates - did a great job trolling and working the spread. They never stopped.

We were there April 7, 2010 - and the sailfish/marlin run had not really started yet. But we did have one sailfish greyhounding behind our spread a few times, but he would never take the bait. However, we did catch 8 nice Mahi Mahi (Dorado) and one 40lb barracuda. We lost one very large bull dolphin and several others, but it was not the fault of the boat or crew. When getting back to the dock that afternoon, we had the most/best catch of any charter.

Oh- and when the first smaller dorado hit the deck. They quickly went into action to filet it and begin making the absolute best cerviche I have had in my life - which is a LOT of cerviche. That became lunch instead of the sandwiches they had for us.

Anyway, if you are looking for a good charter boat in that area of Mexico, I would highly recommend the Wasabi Loco service, and the Wasabi Loco boat. Or if you have a bigger party, go with their 46' Hatteras.

Anyway, good fishing!

I know they have a 23' Sea Craft as well.

You can check out the boats on their website at:
http://www.wasabiloco.com/boats.htm

They probably have connections for other small boats as well.
I do not know if their is any backcountry type fishing anywhere on that area of the coast, but I am sure the guy Richard who runs Wasabi can tell you.

Good fishing!

Thats really good to know. The last time we went to Cozumel, we took the advice of the travel agent on a fishing charter. We were treated to old bait, old lines, messed up lures and a boat that scared the bageebees outta me.

We later found out that the best charters were referred by the scuba shop right there on sight.

The closest thing to blue water near me are the 50K-60K acre Corps impoundments. However, I have chartered a few deep sea trips in years past. I decided my last one would be my last one. We chartered a trip out of Cabo for Dorado back in September of 2008. We went out in what the mate said were 6' to 8' swells. I have no idea whether that was accurate or if those are even big swells, but it suddenly became a concern when the engine died several miles out and we had to go up top so they could work on it. They eventually got it running and we went back down to the deck to start trolling again, at which point the fish started biting. That was some consolation to those of us who got seasick up top. After that I decided that it was just no longer fun enough to justify the expense. The best saltwater experiences I've had have been on the flats, so that's where I'll spend my money from now on.
