This site has some great pictures and a different and I think better way of setting points. It is more trouble to set the points this way, but it has been my experience that the motor runs better and starts easier if you set the points like this. He shows setting up the points with out the coils on the armature plate, but you can make up a jumper wire and feed it through a small hole in the base of the armature and test with the coils and all in place, you must take loose the ground, and condenser wires and I go ahead and take loose the kill wire from the points. Then you hook up your jumper wire to the screw on the points and run it out from under the armature being sure to keep it out of the way of the flywheel....Now take a look at this guys article and pictures. Hope it will help you as much as it has me. I have just had trouble getting motors to run good when I try to set the points by gapping them .020". Even one I just got back from the mechanic a few weeks ago now runs much better after I set the points this way. OMC actually at one time offered a timing fixture that you could buy that took the place of the fly wheel and let you make this adjustment real easy, wish I could find one. The Old Outboard Motor Service Manual Volume 1 shows a picture and shows how to use it, which goes along with how this guy does it using the flywheel and jumper wires.
