Just bought a 1974 70hp evinrude. Is it a good'n. Or is it a time bomb? Good compression an all 3 cylinders 120psi. Runs great. New coils. New cdi box. New plugs. New water pump. Ugly as homemade soap! Nothin a rattle can can't fix tho. Did that era 70 hp's have a good rep or bad? Also noticed some green sticky stuff on the powerhead that appears to have come from the stator. Is this bad? If so why? How can I correct it?

Well, it's made it for 35 years, so can't be too bad.

The green stuff suggest the stator may eventually need replacement, but it's still working so why mess with it. It's not repairable, just replace when NG.

Very true wilde1j. Just wanted some feedback from a few members who are familiar with the motor.

Yea, these 70's were a lot better motors than the 55hp counterparts. I would price the stator and see if replacing it in the future is something that you would feel comfortable with. I know parts for these are spendy, but it looks like someone has already replaced a lot of them. Thats a good thing to your favor. It sounds mechanically sound, so it should be a good investment, if the price is right.

Well I paid 300 for it and I feel the price was right. What causes that stuff to leak down out of the stator and what is it? I need a set of controls for the motor as well

300 bucks is reasonable for that motor. You might try these places for controls and stuff. Also try Ebay.
