Did the water pump today, 2002 Johnson 90-

What a PITA, you are supposed to be able to pull a pin on the shift linkage and push to disengage, but the carb is in the way, so had to get on the other side and pull it loose from there. I never would have figured it out from the book, I ended up taking a few pics (aren't digital cameras great?) and printing them, and driving to the local dealer to get advice.

I ended up taking both lower side covers off to get at the bolt and pin.

Here's the pin (looking from underneath):

Here's the other side (bolt is under the connector in the center of the picture with the red end):

Here's some good news:

I have a good stand to work on the lower unit:

I have success:

Now for the bad news... I forgot to moly lube the drive shaft splines when I put the lower end back. Should I pull it again to lube it? I cleaned the splines when I pulled it, just forgot to grease them when I put it back. It is a royal pain. I suppose I can probably pull it in about 45 minutes being I know how, putting it back takes a little longer. I guess if I have to pull it again, I have a stand to place it...

Thanks for your advice.

I have some good news for you, Ill guarantee that the next time you do it, it will be much easier! ;)

Im not going to be the one to tell you that you dont need to grease the splines, because I have been through trying to pull a lower with rusted splines. Do you run in salt water? If so especially important then. Add some marine grease to the splines of the prop shaft as well.

Good luck.

BTW, nice jig that you made for working on the lower, makes it much easier doesnt it!

if you are in or near salt or brakish water take it back down and use anti seize or water resistant grease ,believe me you dont want the lower stuck
but if you run in fresh water just wait till next year and do it when you change your impellar.
great job bennyb
