I would guess it depends where you are. When I lived on Vancouver Island my first boat was a 14 foot springbok deep V with a 6HP on it. I spent a year slaying salmon with that beast closer to shore. No cuddy option though.

I suspect you are in the 19+ foot range for a cuddy.

20 or 21 foot walkaround is OK to start. But belive me, if you start sleeping on it, you will want a bigger boat very quickly.

the best type of boat will be determined by where you will be boating. Boating in Florida on the space coast is different than the gulf coast which is different than the Texas coast.

buying an older boat may mean more to fix. buying a newer boat may mean more initial cash outlay.

when you say "smaller and lighter" are you talking 12'. 20', or 40'. 2000#, 4000#, 10,000# please provide a range.

and you want a cuddy, which puts you in the 19' + range, 21" if you actually want to start to be comfortable.

is the intended use primarily fishing, or pleasure?

17' Arima Sea Chaser. No deep V but stable and good fuel economy.

looking for 17 to 20 foot range comfort is not a concern as long as I'm not sleeping out in the rain so the cuddy just needs to be barely big enough for me. will be boating around vancouver bc and local islands (not vancouver island). will be used for fishing and pleasure. really want the smallest boat i can get that still has a cuddy and a deep v hull...

the smallest cuddy I know of is a 17' not much room in the cabin, however I think one could sleep in a fetal position. I would recommend a 21' wellcraft or formula for a deep vee.

I wouldn't be looking at anything less than 19' if you're looking for a cuddy. If it's more important for you that the boat be "smaller & lighter", well you can sleep under the canopy of a 14'.

Re: good smaller ocean boat

My current boat is a 1996 Proline 201 walk-around cutty w/150 Merc Offshore OB . Not fancy but practical. My use is 50% fishing 50% pleasure, super boat deep V handles great, low maintenance, self bailing, no wood, no carpet, no frills, hose washdown after use, and best of all no winterizing except for 'potty antifreeze' and 'fuel stabilizer'. Cabin is small and bland but functional. It pulls around easily, total load 4500 lbs including trailer. I've had many different types of boats in different phases of my boating years, each one has it's own purpose, from runabouts , cruisers, pontoons, etc.. All depends on what and where you want to do with your boat, when you get tired of one type sell it and move on.. buying low and selling high helps. To me this one is less time working on it and more time in it.. Search around for " Proline 201 " Since their offshore not to many available around inland waterways.

I saw an Arima at the NY boat show last year. They're built in the Pacific Northwest somewhere and not well known on the east coast, but I thought it was a very cool boat. They pack a lot of functionality into a smallish hull.

these are designed for the northwest and are built in Seattle. I am looking at one now and live in the SF bay area. They are a bit expensive but keep their value. How about a C-dory, if speed is not an issue ? Arimas have no wood after 1985. Very light. Just not a v-hull. The smallest v hull cuddy I know is a Seaswirl Striper at 19 feet. This is also a great boat. my best friend has one. He sleeps on it regularly.

Dont buy a Campion from the 80s, they pound somthing terrible and 9 chances out of 10 the stringers are rotten, ask me how I know. I would recomend at least a 22 ft, with at least a 18 degree deadrise. The Bayliner 2252 is a good cruiser and easy to fish out of, just make sure it has been well maintained. You will get lots of recomendations, the biggist thing is get it checked by a reputable marine surveyor, take it out for a test run,and find a good mechanic to check the drive train and motor. Last of all I highly recomend you look for one that is equiped with fresh water cooling, preferably a full closed system, good luck and happy boating.
