On the small boats, there were 2 galley slaves per oar. On the larger boats, 4 galley slaves. That's where we get "2 stroke" and "4 stroke" engines.
Damn typos, will ever I learn!!!!
As usual, you're in way over your head. In the year 200 length was measured in increments of a stroke, which was universally accepted to equal what we now know as four feet. Therefore, a two stroke simply meant a boat propelled by eight foot oars, while a four stroke model boasted sixteen footers and was the scourge of the seas.
