Goodyear Sea Bee 1.5hp Ring Specs

I have a Goodyear Sea Bee 1.5hp that some one put undersized rings in and has not enough compression to run. I need the size they are supposed to be or a source to get them. If I put 2-3 squirts of oil in the spark plug hole it fires right up 4-8 seconds until oil is gone. The installed rings have a end to end .25" gap and do not protrude past the piston OD.
BTW I am real new to the outboard scene and I am 63. I want to try some fishin.
Thanks for any help.

The GSB was built by Gale. You might try Evinrude for parts.

Since you didn't see fit to give us a model number can we assume it is a 025-3562? That Gale motor used a part number 201989 piston ring (2). 201989 is superceded by 278303, piston ring set. At your friendly Evinrude or Johnson dealer. It is classified as a vintage part and will probably have to be special ordered.

Those were the correct rings and I now have compression. It starts and runs for about 3-4 seconds on every pull only if full choke and fast throttle setting. anything else no fire. It has plenty of fuel available and if I cover the carb air intake with my hand it wets everything and I have to wait an hour or so to try again. It will not fire at any other setting. It runs strong when it runs on each pull but only for seconds. I have a strong bright blue flame with a spark tester. I have worked on engines all my life, but I am not familiar with outboards and their quirks. I always thought if you have compression, fuel and fire it runs.

Sure sounds like a carb problem you need to go through and be sure all passages and jets are clean. You might try squirting fuel mix into the carb.
I'm betting it runs off the squirt.Do you use the primer for a cold start?
High speed needle setting is 1/2 turn out from gently bottomed.Needs to be done with knob and primer cam removed.

That motor has a Tillotson model MD carburetor. Conventional choke, not a primer. Helps to know what you are dealing with.

Spark, fuel and compression are three necessities. On a 2-stroke, you have a fourth. It must have compression in the crankcase. Are your main bearings worn out and leaking air? Are your reeds OK? Is the piston upside down? How about the piston fit in the cylinder? The piston skirt seals between the exhaust ports and crankcase. I'm not sure of the specs on the 1.5hp, but the newer 3hp is .0025"-.004"
