i have a 1973 evinrude starflite 85 v4 engine. just got it on the boat the other week and first outing with it the engine was very quiet at start up, ran and idled great! took it out and went WOT for 45 minutes straight pretty much and after idling back down the engine was a little louder and had a misfire and been misfiring since then, not very bad. half throttle and up runs great though its just down low rpm.

i have a timing light im going to hook up to diagnose it or at least try. when looking at the engine i noticed a fair amount of green gluey substance leaking down from the stator area under the flywheel. its all dried up and its pretty well a hard glue thats a bit tacky running down the engine and on the carbs but none got in it. i wasnt able to take a picture and considering the boat is half hour away i cant do that right now. any ideas?

btw it has new CDI coils, wires and plugs and new ground wires on it with a rebuilt fuel pump.

also when priming the pump/carbs i gotta pump the primer bulb like 5 full times before it hardens up everytime i go to start it after its been sitting a couple days. i dont know if this is normal??? i dont remember it taking much to pump my 73' evin 50

Those 1973 stators all melted around 1975. It's amazing that yours got this far. Or perhaps the replacemant melted. Anyway, it needs to be replaced unless it already has been and they didn't clean up the mess. They usually won't start if melted.

Don't worry ablut the primer bulb. Nothing unusual there.
