My 1994 Chevy Silverado 2500 is making a very funny noise when I do a u-turn.

Basically, whenever I turn a hard left, it feels like the right front wheel grabs and I can hear a grinding noise. If I am low speed, like in a parking lot or making a slow u-turn, it will stop the truck.

What can I look for? I do not see any evidence of broken bushings, etc. I replaced the rotors and pads today (this problem surfaced yesterday morning)since they were due.

I can't figure this out. And I am already tired of SWMBO telling me not to turn it so far left.

Is it 4x4? If so it could be a cv shaft thingy.

How many miles on it? Look for ripped outer CV joint boots. If you find one, the joint is almost automatically toast. Doesn't take too long for dirt to rip up a CV Joint. A torn boot lets lubricant out and dirt in.

Even in the absense of a torn boot, the CV joint sounds like the culprit. Jack up the front end, turn the wheel to the left and try rolling the tire.

Re: Got a funny noise in Big Blue

Thanks guys. I went back out and drove it hard left and hard right. The symptoms were the same.

It is a 4x4, and I glanced down and noticed the shifter was in 4H, so I put it back into 2H. Problem solved.

I will be taking a good look at the CV boots and joints later this week. 116,000 miles, so I expect they need replaced.

Again, thanks a bunch!

While you are at it, look at the wheel bearing too. Might be it because of the grinding noise.

My '02 silverado also gets knuckle lock when turning sharp while in 4WD. The nature of the beast.

Thats pretty funny I wonder how long you were running 4H instead of 2H.

One other thing that has not been mentioned, especially since you discovered you were in 4H. '94 Burbs did not have 'full time' or 'all wheel drive'. There is not a viscous coupler, in the transfer case, between the front axle and the rear axle.

Driven for extended periods on solid ground, which allows little wheel slippage, the transfer case gears try to bind up as the wheels roll at different speeds. You can bind the whole system into a lock up that will eventually explode your transfer case.

Gotta agree with boomyal, without a centre diff or a vis coupling everything starts to get tensioned up, eventually something will snap. Maybe you've just damaged a C/V joint, hopefully not.

Aldo

My 92 S10 4x4 did the same thing, never found or had a real problem, sold it at 225000 miles. Did change the front bearings (due to high water) and front cv's, still did the same thing in any sharpe turn, in reverse even more would feal like it was completly bond up. and on hard pavment extra tire wear in 4 wheel.

I drove about 35 miles with it in 4H. I plan on changing out al fluids, etc. when I work the boots.

This was definitely a "DOH!" moment.

Re: Got a funny noise in Big Blue

All 4x4's will do this on solid ground when in 4H. My durango takes extra power to back up in 4H, and forget about turning on solid ground.
Your probably fine with running it in 4H for 35 miles. Depends on speeds and how many sharp turns you've made. Changing the fluids would be a good idea, be sure to check well for metal residue. Should be in good shape though.
