1973 Johnson 115

Chapter 1...hehe

$500.00 project boat.

Seller says it won,t start. Ok whats wrong with it? "powerpack I think". "Been out a few times this year ran great". "Then no spark". Ok I can fix about anything.

Chapter 2

Got it home went through the ignition and didn't find anything real bad. Stator oozing thats about it. Checked all connections hooked up the muffs and turned the key. Vroom... life in this beast.

Checked comp. 1-100# 2-115# 3-110# 4-115

Gave everthing the once over and took it out. Runs great...Little finicky at idle revs but ran like a scared rabbit at the top end and good at mid-range.

Had her out 5 times not much changed but previous outing it ran a little rough...yesterday evening took it out to do a mild decarb... can of seafoam in 3 gallons of gas oil mix. Warmed up motor switched to tank with the seafom puttered around for 15-20 minutes. Shut her down to soak it and fish for a while. Start her up after about 30 minutes of sitting...Cruising about 1/3 throttle big misfire. ( just for a moment ) it recovered and we went on. Shut her down to do some more soaking/fishing and now when I try to gaer up and go it dies . After about the 4th try Iget moving.
Did this 2 more times, same trouble getting it going. Figured the pluggs were fouled during the process. This morning went out to change plugs and while all the plugs were out I did another comp. check. Ouch...#1 is< 50#. Pulled the head to have a look see and no catastrophic damage. Piston has some dings but no chunks missing. Cylinder wall has a small score. No real gouges at the intake or exhaust ports. After removing the exhuast cover I noticed that 1$3 are much drier and less carboned than 2&4. Going to remove and disassemble the power head to get piston out so I'll have a better picture of things. Any thoughts...?

Thanks for reading my novel,
Mike

Yep, it needs to be rebuilt. A carburetor probably fouled.

The stator should not "ooze" anything.

Searching for the cause here...obviosly lean condition created the problem but what else do I look for other than carb. Will do the carb for sure but want to cover all angles. Funny thing the plug from the bad cylinder didn't appear to show any real sign. Reeds maybe?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Got a minute....motor gurus...long

Thanks for the replies guys . Got the powerhead off last night split the block this morning and found both 1&3 have broken top rings. Now to find a machine shop to see if the block is serviceable. Still dont know what caused this.
Crank journals at #1 & #2 connecting rods have a small nick in them too. This one is starting to add up $ . Might be able to get the crank polished. Got a couple feelers out on a used crank.
Man I love a challenge.

Mike
