Got a trailer blowout today!

I just bought a new truck, a '96 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer W/351 engine. Until today I haven't pulled trailers with too far with it.
http://photobucket.com/albums/v222/ryanwhaler/Bronco/

The back tires on the truck are pretty worn and old. One of them has a large high spot in the middle of the tread, causing some vibration at high speeds on the highway. I have new tires ordered already, they are getting mounted Monday.

Last night me and a buddy decided to take the Montauk out today, I didn't think much about my back tires, my friend was at my door at 7:30 and we where hooked up and on our way. I get on the highway, and notice that the bow rail is shaking all over the place, wow I'm thinking to myself, this tire is pretty bad. I assumed the vibration was coming from the truck. It was shaking bad enough that if I didn't already known I had a bad tire on my bronco I would have pulled over to see what was up. I just kept it around 55 mph and went on my way.

All the sudden I hear a big BANG!!. Turns out the vibration wasn't coming from the truck, it was the trailer tire. It sounded like glass breaking. I was in the second lane out of four running just around 55 mph. The boat starts fishtailing back and forth, I look in the passenger side mirror and see that the trailer tire blew up, the tread came off and bashed my fender all to hell, and left back rubber marks up the side of the boat, before flying off. There wasn't many other cars on the road, I was able to slow down and get over to the breakdown lane, if I had been going much faster I might have been in trouble, the short wheel base of my truck was having a hard time going straight as the boat fishtailed back and forth.

Now I'm on the side of the highway with a tire that's blown to shreds, and being its a new truck I didn't have ANY tools with me. I open my hood and take out the factory jack, its turns to dust in my hands, its rusted out from road salt, then I pull out the lug wrench, well, that fits the trailer, but that's all I got. I had to call (and wake up) another friend to come bring us a jack and socket set. The fender was too bent up to get the new tire on, I had to take it off.
I get my spare on and we’re good to go, or so I thought. I get in the truck and boot it, pull out of the breakdown lane, get up to be 45 mph and my hood comes flying up!! Turns out I didn't latch it down after taking the jack and lug wrench out. Scared the @#$% out of me!! I again pull back into the breakdown lane, get out to close it. Well that wasn't happening, the coils that hold it up are bent, can't get it closed. After a little banding with a hammer and flathead, which I got from the kid behind me, who went from half asleep to laughing his *** off, I'm back on my way. What a morning it was.

I put the boat in the water anyway, running on my spare with no fender, who needs those anyway? ;-) I wasn’t turning back after all that.

We ended up having a blast on the water, I'm SOOO glad I didn't give up and go home after the rough start.

About my tires,
They aren't that old, I believe the previous owner replaced them just a few years ago. The tire had plenty of tread left, and no signs of aging. I had the proper amount of pressure in it, I guess its just one of those things the can fail without notice, I'm sure glad I wasn't going faster or in a lot of traffic when it happened.

Man, that's nasty. Lucky there wasn't more damage.

I guess it could have been worse. Had the traffic been heavy. Would have paid to see that hood come flying up. Maybe should have pressure washed that rig before you took her out.

Funny you should post this today. On my way home from the lumber yard today I saw a guy that also had a trailer blow out. Except he ended up in a deep ditch along side the road.

You have had an eventful couple of days. I hope you bad luck has run its course.

Although I would like to have seen your face when the hood popped up. :)

That wasn't a blowout, Ryan. You had a flat tire and drove on it until it disintegrated.

Those tires were new in 2002 and had a good 5,000 miles on them.

No basis for blaming Carlisle.

Ryan T said:"The back tires on the truck are pretty worn and old. I "third" the low air/flat tire assessment. I've had a tire on the Mountianeer blow. Entire side wall was missing, rest of tire intact. That tire looks like a "run flat". You are lucky it didn't catch fire. People have burned down entire forests by towing a trailer with a tire that caught fire from running low or flat. Chuncks of burning rubber flying off into the brush... They have been found responsable and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. They are financially wiped out.

Hmmmm. Come to think of it, that tire was clocked at 80 by a MN Smoky. My son actually charmed him out of a ticket.

Some thinking and accountabilty are needed prior to hitting the road. Faulty equipment plus poor judgement will catch up with you.

I'd agree. Operating a vehicle in unsafe condition is just wrong. It's dangerous, not only to the driver and passengers, but to everyone else on the road.

Those tires on the truck made for an unsafe condition. In addition, the trailer tire was probably seriously underinflated. I see that at the launch ramp all the time.

I put a tire gauge on my trailer tires before each tow, and inflate them to the proper pressure if they are even 5 lb too low.

I can see both trailer tires in my side mirrors while on the road. I check them frequently while towing, and watch frequently to make sure the trailer is tracking properly behind me.

When my tow vehicle's tires are worn, I replace them.

Common sense is apparently pretty uncommon.

He's just a kid, lets give him a bit of a break.

Seriously Ryann, if that jack was so rusted it fell apart in your hands, I would bet the whole underside of the truck is like swiss Cheese. I see it all the time on our plow trucks. I would check the frame and all the front end for rust, poke around a bit with a screw driver.Brake lines and fittings could be on the verge. Cant even imagine the body mounts and the motor mounts. That truck could be a rolling time bomb, just waiting to let loose.

Do you have annual inspections where you live?

No sorry, lets not give him a break.

Let's tell him he has done something stupid, ill conceived, and bordering on the criminal.

Lets ask him to show some common sense in the future. To consider that if something looks broken, feels broken and makes nasty noises/vibrations, then it is reasonable to conclude it is broken.

Even kids need guidance and a touch of reality.

And at the same time lets ask him to consider what the consequences could have been if the trailer/vehicle had become uncontrollable and caused an accident. That's right.Who knows?

But what I do know is that if an accident had occurred, and police called, they would have checked the vehicles for roadworthyness. Then the **** would have hit the fan.

I agree that young folks need advice and guidance.

They don't need to be called names and berated.

An error is an error. Many an adult know it all has made the same error and worse.

Lighten up, John. Ryan knows now, and freely admits, that he screwed up. I know Ryan. It wont happen twice.

Point taken JB. My apologies all. A little too much of the 'glass half empty' I'm afraid.

Although, if he had made a similiar error of judgement with a shotgun in a crowded shopping centre (my comparison to the car and trailer scenario) I am not sure we would all be so keen to step back from giving our opinions.

But lets move on.....

Re: Got a trailer blowout today!

I'm with JB. I had all sorts of "advice" and criticism for Ryan. But, there a benefit to him posting - to get the attaention of some of us who don't always think these things through and make mistakes. I'm thinking specifically of two things: what could have happened if the boat wasn't secured front and back to the trailer and what might have happened if the tow vehicle had been a little too light for the rig. We get both a lot E.g. "the boat's so heavy, it sits tight on the trailer when I go over bumps - why would I need tie-down straps?" and "the trailer's heavier than the capacity for my vehicle, but it tows it fine for the short distances I go."

Before I thank Ryan for having the guts to post a horror story and what the outcome was, the only other dig, er, I mean friendly advice, I have is why would you go 55 when it's vibrating so much? Wouldn't it be prudent to go slow enough to make the vibration go away? So what if it takes you 15 minutes more to get to the launch.

Anyway, seriously Ryan, I'm well into middle age and still do a few stupid things. We all get a kick out of telling about others who do what we (now) know to be stupid things. For example the boat launch stories we all laugh at (most of which I personally have done - usually only once!) I can't count the number of real bone-headed things I did in my teens and 20s (and later), usually due to inexperience, not thinking things through, impatience or all of the above. Thanks for being man enough to show us some hard lessons learned.
