Ok got the used motor today and this is what I found. Needs a new starter pinion as I mentioned earlier. It seems to be in decent shape, but I have a couple questions. Take in mind I have a repair manual on the way because I plan on doing all the repairs that I am capable of doing.

1. Lower unit oil drained and looked like a light chocolate milk color. I am pretty sure this indicates water is getting in somewhere? The lower unit isnt cracked anywhere and shows no damage, so would I need to just get a lower unit seal kit?

2. can you power wash an inboard? its kinda greasy dirty looking and I would prefer it to be clean looking. If anyone knows a safe way to clean the engine, I would appreciate it.

so here is what I am going to do initially and you guys let me know if there is anything else you would recommend.

change the old worn out starter pinion gear, replace lower unit seals, and change out the impeller.

My grandfather bought a 71 9.5 brand new and ended up passing away 6 months later. My dad inherited the motor and we used it very rarely on camping trips when I was growing up. I swear that motor has less than 50 hours on it today. Anyway, the motor was and still is the most reliable outboard we ever owned and I have many fond memories of the old Johnny. As for cleaning, I like automotive brake cleaner, I find it removes grease and oil better than anything. You can still buy factory colour match paint too if you want to go all out. Impellor is a must and yes, you need to reseal the gearcase. As I recall the starter pinion is nylon or plastic and were prone to failure if you werent carefull pulling the cord.
Ill bet you will be happy with the motor.
oh yeah, I just remembered, thats the motor I learned to water ski behind when I was a kid!

Yes that looks like the complete kit. I forgot to mention that you should also change any fuel lines to the new alcohol resistant type since we have ethanol in our fuel these days. It may have been converted already but why take the chance?

You can clean it with the degreaser and water, just don't use anything real high pressure, and don't spray under the flywheel or the srarter or electronics that you can see.

You might want to replace the o-rings on the drain plugs and pressure test the gearbox before doing the seals - sometimes that is where the water is getting in.

are the o rings supposed to be attached to the plug, or actually to the lower unit. The plugs are just a bare screw.

They should be on the plugs, resting under the head. They may have come off of the plugs and might be stuck inside of the threaded hole in the gearcase. If they are missing or not seating properly (a distinct possibility if they have come off of the plug) , you may have your explanation for water in the oil.

The part number for the "Plug & Washer Assembly" is 307551, and the cost is $3.65 each. I recommend that you just replace both the upper and lower plug. When you do, screw the threaded end of the lube bottle/hose into the lower hole in the gear case. Pump lube in to the correct level (see your manual), then install the upper plug before unscrewing the tube. Have the lower plug ready to put in right away and do so quickly. You will lose some lube during this process, but the vacuum created by putting the upper plug back in will minimize that.
