Got my stringer wood. Need advice

I got my stringer wood this morn. I got (2) 1 X 12" X 14', and (2) 1 X 8" X 14'. Now i have seen people use cardboard as a template for cutting the stringers and thats what i plan to do. But im just basically looking for some pointers on how to do this. I got my glass materials for glassing them down, and im planing on using the PL Poly construction adhesive to bed the stringers to avoid having the stiff joints. The wider boards are for the middle 2 stringers and the 8" ones are for the outside 2 stringers. I am going to have to cut all 4 of them to make them fit right and so that my deck will be perfectally level. I dont have the old stringers to go by as templates but i know right where the floor (deck) is going to be so im going to use that as a point of referance as to how tall the stringers need to be and i know that measurement is going to be different every couple of inches of the legnth of the stringer. Thanks to everyone that has any tips that they want to share. Ive got a few things to do before i start on the stringer placement but im really thinking about how im going to do this. get you hull side to fit, as that is the curve side. then chalk a line for the top side, straight cut.

Since I did this recently the same way as you are speaking of I have a few opinions/pointers.

I used smaller pieces of cardboard to start to ease the process of getting the shape of the hull, 4' or so chunks and fit them as I went along and taped them real good to the next piece I had fitted until I had the entire length, then I transferred that to one really long piece of card board for final template, (I used a storm door box to get a 16' continuous chunk of card board)./ Here is the kicker, card board is thin and will tend to find the lowest point of where you are fitting it, if you have any slope or irregularites to your hull or channel you have to account for this prior to cutting your wood, other wise you will have too large of gaps, I can tell you that PL does NOT cure in gaps much larger than 1/4".

Next thing is; I do not know if you left channels sticking up or not, but I would NEVER leave channels sticking up out of the floor again if ever rebuilding another boat, they cause greater amount of work in glassing/filleting, would be lots easier to grind off.

Look at your 1x's, they will have some sort of cup and twist in them, account for that too.

Just as TD said after that, snap a line.

OH, and whatever you do, if ever using 1708 biax when you glass these things in,
DO NOT CUT ACROSS THE ROLL-CUT IT LENGTH WISE-
I learned the hard way.

What do you mean about cutting the roving? I am using 24oz roving and it is verry thick. I usually unroll some and then cut what i need off the roll then roll it back up it the cardboard roll thing it came in. Are you saying i should not do that? I mean the strands come out of it easily cause its so thick but if im careful this does not happen. If it does and im careful i loose 1 strand where i cut. And that strand is a really really thick strand of glass. I cant believe how thick this stuff is!! Ill get a pic of it real quick. Thanks for the input!!!

Yes that is exactly what I have learned with 1708 biax anyway, from Oops actually, you can look at the last couple posts of my thread for Oops inputs for my problems. I did two layers on all four stringers, it was kicking my butt the whole way, I spent many - many hours and I tried every technique and the tops/edges just would go whacko- this was a painful and expensive lesson for me, just keep it mind.
Today I was using 8oz to weather proof the bulkheads, compared to the week from hell I had just gone through -LOL- this was a joy to work with.

I was planning on useing this stuff for the stringers about 3/4 the way to the top of the stringer and then about 5-6 inches onto the hull on eather side of the stringer. Then useing mat on the top and running a line of this 24oz across the top of the stringer and then matting that all in. Its hard to explain. But ive seen the trouble that oopps is going through with wrapping roving over the stringer. I want a good bond to the hull and thats why i was planning on just making that 90 degree on both sides of the stringers to the side of the stringer and about 6" to the hull then capping the stringers. What do you guys think about that? Im not about to break out thumb tacks and what not to try to african engineer glassing in my stringers like that. Thanks for all that input though i need to know the best method!!!!! And am i useing the right roving. Im working really hard on this thing today and its a beautiful day outside. I got the feaver!!!! I wish i was out in the bay with a 2 of my buddys.

Im not useing cloth at all im useing roving, that really really thick roving thats in the pics

Oh ok. Thanks lund. I just bought the thickest, strongest, roving i could find. I got it cause i wanted strength. I dont know what 1708 is like cause i havent used it. But i was just asking what you were talking about cutting it length wise and why you should do that. Thanks a lot Lund and your restore is SOO Awesome looking!! You are going to have something better that a new Lund!!!! Sweet!!!

after the stringers are in.....as long as you know the deck height.....

you and just subtract the depth of the deck wood...mark....and snap a stringline...for the stringer height.....

doing it outside the boat as td suggested or inside....outside is a bit easyer...either way...you will need to grind them down a wee bit to get rid of high spots

If you are wrapping it, thick enough (seems you are)
The cloth is the strength, the wood is just a form.
