Got smokin deal...got a couple of questions.

I didn't care for my trailer, so in my search for a better one, I came across an Oklahoma trailer that was awesome! But it came with a 1977 Bayliner that was in SAD condition, and an Evinrude 175hp engine. The ad didn't have pictures of the engine, just of the boat exterior and the trailer. $500... I showed up, and the trailer was better than expected. The pictures took away from its actual appearance and condition. The boat was sadly...as expected. The entire interior was ripped apart, the floor gone, stringers gone and the foam was crumbled. Even the fiberglass was in shoddy shape. Hopeless. But I expected to see an engine that was shot too...to my surprise, the engine was in fantastic shape! The exterior was only SLIGHTLY faded paint. NO chips, no scratches. Popped the cap and wires were all in good shape, not a whole lot of grease and grime. I turned the flywheel and it seemed to have a LOT of compression as you could feel it pop past each cylinder's cycle. AND came with a MASSIVE engine stand. SCORE!!

SO! My questions...
1) My boat 'capacities' sticker says 140 for hp. But the existing engine is the 125hp inline 4. The 175 is a big ol' v6. The donor boat was the exact same size boat as mine....same manufacturer, and it was even a capri. Would it be safe to swap? I've also heard horror stories that if your motor is larger than the sticker specifies, it can be a hefty fine. Also that too much power can make them flip. True or wives tale?

2) Now that I've got my 125 running really good, if I do this swap, what would it be worth to sell for? I know that the engines are the mass of the value of a boat. But what's it worth? It IS a force engine... I know that hurts its value.

Thanks!

Overpowering your boat would be a bad idea for many reasons that are repeated here forever.

Keep the 125, sell the 175.

I'd sell both and upgrade to the nicest 140 in the newest technology (4 st. or DFI) you can afford. There's more than one way to turn that nice 175 into a bigger and better engine for your boat.

I know you know this but for what it's worth, the manufacturer rates boats to specific hp's for a reason. Regardles of fines or violations, your boat isn't made to handle a 175.

I like the idea of selling them both and getting a new or newer 140. your on to something there!!
