Got sucked under!

My friend has a sit-down jet ski, and I have a stand-up.

She was driving around in a counter-clockwise circle, at a slow to medium speed.
So I drove up to her left side (about 3' from her) and started doing the same, I was on the inner- counterclockwise circle. I wasn't standing-up, I was sitting on my knees.

After about 20 seconds, I instantly got sucked underwater. INSTANTLY!
Keep in mind I was moving. I lost all forward motion and steering in a heartbeat, and me and my jetski were sucked under about 8-10 feet.

The rear of my ski got pulled down first, where I fell off and got sucked under the ski, where it followed, nose up.

She thought I fell off so she drove away.

The ski surfaced first, and I followed seconds later.
Keep in mind I had my life jacket on, and STILL got sucked down.

Is this a fluke? has it happened before?
Or am I just crazy and probably hit my head a little too hard when I fell off?

crazy idea, but is it possible you churned up the water and got enough air bubbles in it to reduce the density of the water causing you to sink?

Didn't want to post it because I thought it was a long shot but that's kind of what I thought.

If the water is suddenly half air....

Re: Got sucked under!

A few years back I was whitewater rafting in WV. The guide - not playing a banjo at the time - suggested swimming one rapid. He said it contained something he referred to as a "hole" in the water. No, not a boat. I was dumb enough to take him up on his suggestion. Went over the first rapid and into the hole. Got sucked under for what felt like 15-20 seconds (probably only 4-5) and popped up about 50 yards downstream. I guess it was sort of a whirlpool? Maybe that's what you created?

Re: Got sucked under!

You created an eddy. Any object on the inside of the "rim" would be pulled down. Now, do that in a river with a swift under tow and you probably would have come up 20 feet away from where you went under...if you were lucky.

We have a couple of natural eddys on the river here. Those areas also have a strong under tow. Not any place you want to jump in. Even with a life jacket on they are strong enough to hold you under for long periods. We have watched entire trees floating down the river hit these and go under and not come back up for several minutes, some never come back up.

If you have never seen one, they are quite amazing, as long as you understand how deadly they are.

Glad you were not hurt.

I love this part. guess she went to find a new friend who wouldn't fall into a hole in the water? LOL

never heard of what you describe but I guess if the two of you creating enough "current" it could happen. that or someone left the manhole cover off again and you fell in......LOL

Re: Got sucked under!

This is just pure physics. You were sucked under do to the toilet affect. In essence, you were flushed.

I'll bet that's exactly what happened. Mythbusters did it about a year or so ago. They put an 18' bowrider on the water and release air under it and the boat went down immediately. And that was a full boat, not just a jetski.

I'm wondering if she did it on purpose....

I'd say it was the toilet effect, I'm sure you came close to leaving something flushable in your shorts.

Re: Got sucked under!

If it were a "flush", you would have spun as you went under. The water was aerated which dropped it's density and no amount of displacement would support you.

Also FYI what you 2 were doing is illegal.
Illegal? Get a life or a Barney Fife badge or as gomer would say "Citizens arrest! Citizens Arrest!"
