Got the motor running now I have a question about the outboard and noise it makes

I have a video to make things easier, We finally got the 4.3 back in and running with timing adjusted, and it seems to be running well, my biggest concern is the noise the outboard makes when you engage forward or reverse, its almost like a grinding clanking noise, I don't know if this is normal.

In the video I took we revved the motor a few times after it had warmed up just to show it stops once you throttle up and it only does it for a tiny length of travel on the throttle control, we already took the linkage off and adjusted it as per the manual's instructions.

Is this a normal sound we noticed it is a longer grinding noise if you engage forward or reverse slower and a louder quick clank if you are quick with it.

This is a Alpha One Gen 2 from a 2004 boat.

The other thing I am noticing is that the engine is bouncing off a rev limiter at around 3500 rpm yet the throttle still has a bit of travel forward, I only let it hit the rev limiter once as it caught me by surprised but do these engines have a low rpm limit without load or anything? 3500 seems low according to the engine specs 4800rpm should be WOT rpm, and the fact that I adjusted the throttle linkage twice to spec and I still have so much travel in the throttle control seems a bit odd.

Slow shifting will make grinding noise in the outdrive. Be snappy with your shifts and it will clunk into gear. No idea if your clank and my clunk are the same sound.

You should verify the tach. It may be reading low and the motor is in the rev limit range. The limiter is closer to 5000 RPM than 3500 RPM. You are talking about 3500 in gear, aren't you?

Correct, 3500 in gear, just not in the water, only with the outboard flusher hooked up. The outboard always make some noise when going into gear right?

Keep reving it in neutral like that and you will be replacing the impeller. Alpha 1 drive clunk going into gear, shift briskly and keep the rpm as low as possable

You shouldnt be going higher than 1500 rpms on muffs. And you shouldn't be in gear on muffs.

Go out and test on the water.

What do you by revving it in neutral? The boat engages forward in the process of revving up. I also don't plan on revving the engine out of water all the time, this was a used motor we just put in and it was untested, I didn't want to find out it couldn't rev out on the water. Thanks for the info on the clunking, I thought the outboard was shot when I first heard it.

Depending on the water pressure supplied you can burn the impeller in the outdrive and then have an overheat on the water
Reving in neutral means nothing just that the throttle plates are opening. What you should have done is run the motor on land to check it out before you installed it

The boat engages forward in the process of revving up

Nope, wrong. the control box engages fwd first at idle, then the throttle function takes over
