Picked up my dad :) for a fishin' trip in Santa Rosa County's East Bay. We left the ramp at 11:00 AM and headed East around Garcon Point. Winds were from the east at 5 to 10 MPH. The bay was lightly tossed with 1 to 2 foot chop, mingled with rollers that came in predictable sets. In ten minutes we were at our fishing spot and I dropped anchor with 30 feet of rode and 12 feet of HEAVEY chain :D During the three hours we spent getting skunked  the wind and waves built until we were taking water over the bow when the 3 to 4 foot rollers assailed my little boat. My boat BTW is a 17' Sundance Skiff. I have perhaps grown a bit overconfident in my little boat, but reallity was fully restored by the relatively small waves that just pounded the crap out of the boat and it's occupants :( When we headed in I rounded the point to find the following seas were lifting the stern to the point that the bow was being plowed into the waves forward of the boat, very nearly causeing water to board. I experimented with various throttle adjustments and course changes to minimize the problem, but nothing really helped much because I was forced to head toward the ramp which put the following seas directly off my stern. I think that if my dad hadn't been aboard I would have tried planing speed, but he would not have appreciated the beating that would have resulted :(
I learned a lot about my boat through this experience though :) No protected open water if winds exceed 7 MPH. Anchoring with all 75 feet of rode will still allow water over the bow if waves exceed 2.5 - 3 feet. Being out in conditions, albeit light, that are more than the boat was designed for is no fun  I have a great little boat that aquitted it's self well, all things considered; but a 19' deep v is probably in my future :D

SoulWinner, it sounds as though you were a very lucky man. Driving down the face of a swell in a following sea is risky move. I am glad you made it in safetly.

I feel for ya, I have a 16' aluminum sylvan deep v, it does ok in small waves.......when I left the river headed to the lake, it was a sheet of glass, after several hours of driving around, and dropping and moving I finally found cleaner water to fish.........10 minutes after I had found the water it got to 1ft waves with an occasional 2ft..........10 more minutes and I look over my shoulder and I see a storm front move in which on a clear day on lake erie you could see for miles......so I figured it wasnt close and was heading away from me, I kept an eye on the storm for maybe 5 more minutes and grew unconforatble with the looks of it so I reeled em in, after about 5 minutes of heading in the waves were 3-4ft with occasional 5's I was crapping my pants.........It seems that throughtout the day of my searching to find clearer water I ventured way out, just my luck half way home my first tank runs out so here I am fighting the waves trying to get to the back of the boat to change tanks..... wasnt a pretty site, every inch of me and my clothes were soaked as I was hitting the waves the wind blew it right in the boat,I ran the bildge pump solid for the last half of the trip as I was taking on alot of spray,........45 minutes late I get back to the dock, thanking god I was ok.......... when I got the boat out, I still had about 6" of water in the back still waiting to drain............I have been leary ever since.........I know 4 ft waves arnt much for some boats but I was sore for 2 weeks after that one...

i have always felt that it is not so much the wave height but the distance between them that has caused me concern. For example a 5 foot roller with 10 seconds between waves doesnt pose any real problem but a 3 foot roller with 4 second intervals will breach your bow if not careful. I hear your pain about Lake Erie I have been caught there many a time in foul weather

Sometimes you have to plane to be safe.

Got caught on the Ottawa River Saturday. 1-3 foot chop, wind 8-10 mph. No problem. Head up river, anchor at an island and have dinner. Wind picks up to 20 MPH going with the current. Waves were moving fast. Anything less than 17 MPH was dangerous in my opinion. Once up on plane, it was a matter of reading the waves and throttle control.
I have a 1964 Deep V 16' Grew w/1965 Merc 650. It performed magnificently. My girlfriend actually enjoyed the "Rollercoaster" and we stayed dry due to the huge Flare the bow has. My dog on the other hand hated the trip.

Safety first though.

No I was coming back down from Giants Tomb back to Port Severn Lock45 I'm still a longway south of Manitoulin at this point, Most boating I do is in the 30,000 islands and Trent Severn waterway
