if the prop spins freely then the drive in in neutral.
If you hear clicking when you spin ghe prop clockwise, then your in foward gear.

the way it's supposed to be.

in fwd. prop locks ccw, ratchets cw
in neu. prop freewheels either direction
in rev. props locks cw, ratchets ccw

sounds like on yours, perhaps the lower may be in rev. and the uppers in fwd. when assembled...maybe

can you turn the upper shift shaft at all when assembled? if the shafts were out of time. i'd still think you could turn the upper, it'd just go the wrong way.

if it don't move at all. i still think you'll end up separating the two. the upper shaft is just free to spin within it's limit of hitting parts of the upper. so it could be oriented any direction and mate with the lower. it's the lower that need to be in fwd with the shift coupler on the upper pointing fwd.. did the lower shift ok by it self?

ah crap that sound confusing. so i need both halfs in foward gear, correct? the helm control is in foward, so now i need to get the prop to act as if its in foward gear ,then set the shift shaft(female) over the gear select shaft(male)? oh yeah i bent the shift shaft washer, can just go to the hardware store and get a stainless washer with the same dimentions? thanks again
