what would be the cause of water filling the oil pan while running on muffs? last year after i pulled her out i flushed her with salt away on my driveway for like 20 minutes and left her. two weeks later i go to winterize and i went to warm up the oil for the change and she ran for about 5 minutes till i noticed no water was coming out the exhaust bellows. i fogged her quick to shut her down (quicker to do that than climb back over the engine to get to the helm and key) figuring i got a blockage somewhere or a bad impeller or something only to find all the water ended up in the pan! totally disgusted at this point because i already knew i needed a new drive the day i pulled her out, i proceeded to extract out all the water/oil mix, pulled the filter but did not add new oil yet. i then finished winterizing by draining the block and filling it with antifreeze. i had planned on changing them anyway so i ordered a set of new manifolds and risers regardless of whats wrong. whether i need a head gasket, rebuild or a new long block i wasn't putting old crap back on. so, where do i start looking for trouble first and if my engine aint junk whats the best way to make sure all water/oil mix is out and good fresh oil is in?

Gotta have a connection between the water & oil so I would begin with a possible head gasket and the worst case may be a cracked head. There are a few other possibilities (cracked block) but the head gasket or cracked head would be the most common. You can start by doing a compression check to kind of localize the problem and know where to look. Once you get the heads off any decent machine shop can tell if the head is cracked. This usually happens from an engine running hot. If it's a cracked block or water jacket then it's from water in the block freezing... most likely. Sometimes those cracks are hard to find unless you get lucky and can pressurize the cooling water system.

it definitely isn't a freezing issue being that this happened at the end of last season before it got cold. thing is the engine ran MINT all season right to the day i yanked her and rinsed her on muffs with the salt away. the next time i start her two weeks later absolutely no water came out the exhaust as far as i could see. she never overheated in the past and didnt run long enough that day to overheat

oh now that makes perfect sence if i got this right. i thought that was just a power steering fluid cooler:facepalm: i guarantee that little bugger is shot. lets say maybe the salt away flush dislodged something or maybe something got stuck from the time i bottomed out in muck and she started running hot until i floored it in reverse a few times and she cooled down quick and clogged up my raw water intake hose past the oil cooler. now say the oil cooler decides to blow and all the water is getting sucked into the oil system by the oil pump?

oh im pumped for this. im on vacation next week. i got my new drive already and all my parts coming this week and my slip is paid for and waiting. i just like having a "mental picture" of what im looking at. having all that water get in there so fast made no sence to me at all. but it does now. thank you for your advice Sir Donald.
